Tessa stands up and grabs her champagne flute. “I guess I went into the wrong business,” she says with a laugh.

“You get to change the world, though. I’m just selling cleaner.”

She grins and finishes her glass. “That’s true. Come help me in the kitchen. I have to get some food in me, or I’ll have to spend the rest of my Saturday napping.”

I sigh as I swing my legs off the arm of the chair. I forgot how comfortable it is. As I pick up my mimosa, I let out a sigh. It’s been too long since I’ve been here, and it almost feels like things have changed since then.

We lived together for three years, and now we don’t even know what the other’s doing. I’d have already heard about Tessa’s last job if I’d been living here, and she’d definitely have heard about the cleaner campaign.

Instead, we have to spend an afternoon catching up. We’re both so busy that I wonder how often this will even happen.

Is it worth it to lose my best friend to gain Em? Tessa will always be my friend, but we won’t be like sisters anymore. We won’t know everything about each other.

A man like Em doesn’t come along every day. No matter how close Tessa and I have been, she’s never made me feel like I was flying.

She’ll never be my beast.

Chapter 41

Emery

“You’re sure you have everything?” I ask one more time.

Madison rolls her eyes. “Oh my God, Em. This is not my first time packing for a trip. It’s not even a plane trip. If I forget my toothbrush, I can just pick up another one.”

I sigh. There’s literally nothing left for her to do as she stands in front of the door. I hate this so much. I can’t see her, can’t protect her, and can’t touch her for three days.

And I have to smile and say goodbye.

“I love you, Madison,” I say as I cross the two steps separating us and wrap my arms around her. I need to feel her in my arms, to smell the soft amber and vanilla that she radiates one more time. “You’d better be safe.”

“I’ll be as safe as the driver is.” She looks up at me as she pulls me tighter. This is hard on her too, but there’s still an excitement in her eyes. “I love you too, Em. You be good while I’m gone. And text me anytime you go out and do your Emery impression.”

I bend down to kiss her, and she kisses me hard. Her lips tell me everything I want to know. She won’t forget me while she’s gone. She’ll think about me, and she’ll want to come home.

“I’ll text you so much you tell me to shut up,” I say with as much of a smile as I can muster. Today is not a day that makes me happy.

“Good. Now I have to go, or ScrubbingAngel in New Jersey won’t be able to show off the awesomeness of Organo-cleanz.”

I nod and let her slip through my arms. It’s hard watching her go, but I’m proud of her. This isn’t something most interns would be capable of. Even if they knew as much as her, a campaign like this isn’t something they’d have taken on all by themselves.

She gives me one more smile before walking out the door. There’s a cab waiting to take her to her apartment where the van will pick her up. It’s obnoxious that we still can’t be public about our relationship, but that’s a small price to pay to have everything.

Soon, we’ll be able to.

When this campaign is over in a month, I think we should have enough of a case study to bring in more business than Emery Brooks ever could. Madison is going to be the one that breaks my chain.

We just need to be patient.

That’s probably the hardest thing I can think of right now. It’s one that definitely requires a stiff drink and something to take my mind off the woman I love.

Then I get a text message.

Dante Poole:You’re finally rid of me. Come celebrate.

What? Dante’s been looking for a new company for a while, but I didn’t think he had any real leads. Now he’s already found one?

Emery Brooks:Where are you? What company did you buy?
