“Thanks,” I say as I dig in my purse for my card, but the cab driver stops me.

“No. Being able to tell my wife that I helped Madison Carter get the guy is more than enough.”

I chuckle and thank him before climbing out of the cab. He’s right about me going to get the guy. Em may have done the hard thing by changing, by putting himself out there, but I have to meet him halfway. I have to be the one that tells him I need him.

Because he’s always been the hero of my story. Even when I was scared of letting myself go back to that place from my past, he didn’t give up. He didn’t even let me stop him from winning me over.

And I won’t let ghosts of the past keep me from giving him what he wants.

I take the stairs two at a time up to the building. As I run through the World Bank building, people watch me, and this time it’s not because I’m doing something stupid.

I see the elevator door begin to close, and I yell, “Hold the door!”

A strong, suited arm sticks out and stops the door from closing. I’m thrown into déjà vu as I come to the door. I’ve been here before. I lost my skirt that time, but I got so much more.

Emery Brooks was waiting for me inside the golden cage, a grin on his face. When I look inside, everything inside me knows that he’ll be there. The grin, the hair, the stunning green eyes.

But he’s not.

Instead, it’s Dante Poole. “You were supposed to call me,” he chides as I step inside.

“Why would I call you when I could just ask Em for my job back?”

He shakes his head. “That job isn’t available anymore.”

Chapter 57

Madison

I blink as the elevator begins the race to the twenty-seventh floor. My old job isn’t available anymore? What?

“You’re joking, right?” I ask as fear creeps up inside me.

“Nope. Stephanie took over the Organo-cleanz campaign, and she’s doing great with it. The wheel of industry stops for no man, woman, or book dragon.”

I frown as he grins at me. “Is this funny?”

He nods his head and leans against the wall of the elevator. “Oh, it’s hilarious.”

I want to stop and scream like a child, but the door to Aspire opens up. “Well, I’m going to talk to Em about it,” I say.

“You’ll have to do that at his house. He hasn’t been to work in a week. Ever since you quit, he’s had other priorities, and Noah’s managing both sides.”

I swallow hard, and say, “The videos?”

He chuckles. “Yep. I guess you haven’t seen them all, or you wouldn’t have such stupid questions.”

I cock my head and step into the reception area, letting the doors close behind me. It’s time that I watch the last video.

Dante doesn’t stay with me. Instead, he walks past Sandy and into the idea room while I get my phone out of my pocket. I’ve seen a lot of things that surprised me, but what is it that was on that first video?

What do I not understand yet?

With shaking fingers, I start the video.

“Hello world, this is the real Em Brooks. Not the guy you’ve seen in interviews or partying like a rockstar, and I’m here to tell you a story.

He’s standing in a pair of jeans and a faded t-shirt in front of the navy wall His hair’s a mess, but he’s still grinning. The grin that I remember so well.
