Well, now there’s no chance that my vagina’s going to listen.

“Eyes up here, Addison,” he says, his grin getting wider. “I feel like a piece of meat standing here with you ogling me.”

“I wasn’t ogling. At least not any more than you did when you were staring at my tits in that sleep shirt.”

He just laughs. I squint at him, but I finally let it go. “Fine. I’m going to go to bed,” I say.

But he stops me. “The full circle thing,” he says. “Since I’m not going to sleep in wet shorts, and I won’t be jumping into your bed, let me have a beer if you have one. I’ve never drank ‘normal’ beer. But it would feel like it’d close the circle up nice and tidy, and I’m a sucker for a nice tight circle.” He gives me a grin, and I completely ignore the innuendo.

“Sorry Phillip, the only thing I have to drink is box wine and Sprite. It’s not too bad after the first cup, but I don’t know if your refined palette could handle it.”

“I’ve gained some perspective, remember? Have a drink with me, and then we can both go to bed. In our own respective sleeping places, of course.”

The way he says that makes me wonder if he’s saying it to patronize me or just to be clear. “Okay, I’ll introduce you to drinking like a college girl on a budget. Watch yourself, though. This magical drink has dropped more than a few panties over the years. Not mine, of course.”

I give him a sideways grin, and he chuckles as he follows me into the kitchen where I pull out the box wine and two-liter of Sprite. As I twist the knob and let the white wine flow into a glass, he looks over my shoulder. I shut the tap off and top it with Sprite before handing it to him.

“So, you made bad sparkling wine,” he says as I repeat the process for myself. I nod, and when I turn around with my glass, I see him sniffing the wine.

“This is terrible,” he admits.

“That’s why you add the Sprite.”

He grimaces as he puts the glass to his lips, and I just watch him. Expecting him to spit it out like some kind of wine connoisseur, I’m surprised when he swallows it and gets a ponderous look on his face.

“It’s still terrible, but very drinkable. If that makes sense. The wine doesn’t change, but the soda lets you ignore it, mostly.” He stops thinking and asks, “Why didn’t you just buy alcohol instead if you were going to attempt to hide it?”

“Box wine is cheaper. Unless we were going to get Everclear, which is a dangerous business for a bunch of girls who are still pretty new at the whole drinking thing. Nobody dies from drinking box wine, but plenty of frat boys get their stomach pumped from liquor.”

I take a sip and completely ignore his criticism of the nostalgia-filled flavor that washes over my tongue. “Plus, wine is classy, and Everclear is not.”

Phillip laughs. “I think our definitions of classy are a little different,” he says.

“Oh, definitely.” I get a terrible, but very fun idea. “Phillip, you went to college, right?”

“I did.” He says it slowly, as though he’s waiting for the real question.

“Well, what was your favorite drinking game…”

Seventeen

PHILLIP

“Drinking game?”I ask.

“Yeah, like King’s Cup or Smoke and Fire? Games that you play while drinking that are supposed to get you to drink more, or… act a little irresponsibly.”

Act irresponsibly? “Like strip poker?”

Addison grins. “Maybe a little less ‘let’s get naked’ and more ‘when’d you lose your virginity’ if that makes sense. Though, yes, some of them are just excuses to take off clothes.”

Does this mean that Addison wants to “act irresponsibly”? Or am I just wishing she was?

“Well, I didn’t play any games like that. My college experience was basically just a bunch of work with a few inconsequential relationship moments thrown in for flavor.”

She frowns, “That’s crazy. College is supposed to be the time when people get to discover themselves. They make terrible decisions so that they can decide what they want from life. Even the Amish know how important that is.”

“I doubt my father cares much about Amish philosophy. Plus, I already knew what I was going to do with my life. Unlike most people, my path was laid out in front of me at birth.”
