That’s why I rented a car and just drove. I needed to get out of New York, away from everything I know. I ate at a terrible diner this afternoon halfway between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Just like in the movies, I tried a piece of apple pie. It was… not something I’d do again, but at least I can cross that off my list.

Now I’m sitting somewhere west of Pittsburgh at the Neptune Motel, and I’m reconsidering my decision. Even the wallpaper is covered in dust that’s probably older than I am.

At least it’s something new. Something other than the same boardrooms, the same hotels, the same offices. Truthfully, I feel like I’m having my first real adventure, even if that adventure includes dust that witnessed the moon landing.

Before I can even sit down at the rickety table and have a beer to wind down, I hear a boom and crash, followed by a scream coming from the opposite wall. The one that I share with that woman from the lobby.

I’m on my feet and out the door on instinct alone. The screaming continues and for a split second, I remember the joke I made. The torture room.

But I don’t hesitate at all. Leaning my shoulder against the door, I shove as hard as I can, and the door slams open, the doorframe shattering.

The woman is in bed with an enormous piece of the ceiling laying on top of her and water flowing like a waterfall from a broken pipe above her head. I rush to her, and I don’t even think she’s recognized that I’m in the room with her as she struggles to get the piece of ceiling off her.

Straddling her legs, which stick out from under the drywall that’s on top of her, I heave and toss it to the side of the bed. She looks up at me, gives me an odd look and then climbs out of bed. I follow, now completely soaked from head to toe as the water covers the floor and bed.

“I locked the door,” she says, more than a little out of breath. It’s a good thing that the door was as shitty as the rest of the motel. My gaze goes to the first thing that I notice, and it definitely isn’t the drywall mud she’s covered in. Her white shirt is completely soaked, sticking to her chest and outlining her breasts. She might as well not even have it on with how transparent it’s become.

“I broke it down.” God, she’s fucking beautiful. Even covered in drywall mud and soaked.

She glances at the door then and sees it barely hanging onto the hinges. “Well, I don’t think that I’m giving them a five-star.”

I chuckle and meet her gaze. “I don’t think there’s anything about this place that’s worth five stars, but being physically assaulted by the building takes it to a whole new level.”

“Facts,” she says and shivers. I guess that she’s finally coming out of the shock because she looks down and immediately covers up. “Jeez. You could have told me you could see my tits.”

I can’t help but laugh. “That would have meant that I’d have seen them for at least a few seconds less.”

“I’m going to change.” Without waiting for an answer, she grabs some clothes off a table and goes to the bathroom. My eyes follow her ass while she stomps away. I’m not entirely sure if I should just leave her alone or if I should stick around. Another look at the door tells me that there’s no way in hell that I’m going to leave her alone.

After only a few moments, she’s walking back into the room dressed in the same outfit she was wearing earlier. “Just so you know, it’s pretty standard practice to let a girl know if her tits are on display and she doesn’t know it. Since you literally broke down a door to save me, I’ll let it go this time.”

“I guess that’s fair. My name’s Phillip,” I say as I put my hand out.

She takes it and says, “Addison.” She looks back at the waterfall that we’ve mostly ignored for the past few minutes and sighs. “I guess I should tell Mr. Jeffrey why he wasn’t supposed to rent this room. And maybe that there’s currently a small pond in it.”

“What are you going to do now that your room has transformed into the motel pool?”

She frowns and shrugs. “I don’t know. I guess I’ll drive around town and try to find another one. Or maybe just sleep in my car. To think I actually did the smart thing and reserved that room, yet I’m still stuck. How unlucky does a person have to be?”

A grin crosses my lips. “Youcouldbe very lucky. I have a stupidly oversized bed that you’re more than welcome to share with me. It’s heart-shaped, so you know it’s nice.”

Her chin falls, and she glares at me. “Sorry Phil, but I’m not that kind of girl. I make it a point to learn a guy’s name at least two hours before I crawl into bed with him, if you know what I mean.”

“I’m offended that you’d think that was what I meant after I literally saved your life from an aggressive motel room. Did you notice how the ceiling was groping you?” I say, pretending to be shocked.

Addison smirks, and I continue, “But seriously, you’re in a bind, and I have a bed big enough to fit four people. We can even make a little wall out of our luggage. Though, I wouldn’t complain if you slept in that other shirt…”

She purses her lips and shakes her head, and it almost looks like she’s considering it. “No, I think that I’ll go look for another room. I’ve already had a room attempt to murder me. There’s a very good chance that with my current luck, you’ll be an axe-murderer, and this whole thing is all just a big setup for an unsolved mystery episode.”

I chuckle and turn away from her, but before I get out of the room, I stop. My hand rests on the broken doorframe, and I look back at her. “If you change your mind, you know where I’m staying.”

She smiles and nods to me.

I take one last look at Addison before walking back to my room, feeling more than a little bothered by how hopeful I’d been at the prospect of this complete stranger sleeping in my bed. And I had meant what I’d said. No strings attached sleeping.

Well, even if Addison isn’t staying with me tonight, at least tonight’s been something different. I’ve had my adventure, but somehow, spending time with her would have been more of an adventure than any freak accident could be.
