I nod. “I never thought I’d like having kids, but after talking to your father, I think I’m sold.”

“I can’t believe you actually talked to him.”

“He’s the guy you based your life on for a long time. I knew that if there was anyone in the world that would understand you, it’d be him. And he’s not as scary now that he’s retired. Would you believe he was playing poker on the internet?”

Phillip blinks in shock. “Look Addison, I can handle a lot of bombs in one day, but let’s stop talking about the way my father’s spending his retirement. I cannot think about the man who never had time for anything wasting his time playing internet poker. My brain is going to break.”

I laugh, and he bends down to kiss me. “I love you, Addison,” he whispers. “And thank you for the best day I can remember. And, you know, marrying me.”

“I love you, too. I can’t wait to get married. You can even wear your new tie.”

He tries to look serious, but then he laughs. This is what Christmas should be. Spending time with the people you care about. Seeing their eyes light up. And knowing that everyone there is absolutely loved.

Because I’ve never felt so loved. “Come on, let’s go home. The roast will be done, and then we can have an excellent Christmas dinner.”

“Are Trish and John still coming?” he asks.

I nod as we walk back to where Mom’s standing and smiling. “Andrew won’t be here until after dinner. His and Sera’s flight got delayed on the way back from London. Mason’s not coming. He said he was going back to that little island in the Mediterranean for Christmas.”

“Victoria’s bringing a date. She’s gone on a full four dates with this one, and he still hasn’t shown his crazy, so we’re betting on when it’ll happen.”

Phillip chuckles and wraps his arm around my waist. “Did you ever imagine life would turn out like this?” I say.

He shakes his head. “Never. I thought I’d be working Christmases until I died. Now… Well, now I understand what a good Christmas is.”

A good Christmas is any I spend with Phillip is what I’ve decided. Just like every other day.

Because any time I’m with him, my life is complete.

Who knew that a series of unfortunate events surrounding the Neptune Inn could be the start of my very own romance? Maybe starting a romance with “It was a dark and stormy night…” wouldn’t be such a bad decision…
