Waiting to be shot. I knew Jacob and his men carried concealed weapons.

But the doors didn’t open.

“You go with him,” barked Jacob’s voice.

“Sure,” said a man. Even from that one word, I recognised him. Toby!

He came round the front and got into the van, which started driving.

The van jostled and bounced over a bumpy road. The fact that Toby was in the van with me had frozen my brain. Should I shout to him for help?

Then I could have laughed at my own stupidity. Did I not have enough proof that Toby did not give a crap about me? Had he known I was being held captive all this time? Probably.

The phone shook in my hand. Surely if the driver worked for Marco, he might have his number in his phone and I could text him? It was my only hope.

Keeping my head down, I tried entering a couple of pin numbers. All zeroes. Then one, two, three, four. But neither worked, and I was too scared to do any more in case I locked the phone.

Time seemed to rush by. The driver and Toby remained frustratingly silent. When we reached our destination, what if they opened the van’s back doors? This moment right now was my only chance.

The driver switched on the radio. Loud music thumped through the speakers in the back of the van.

I tried my fingerprints on the scanner. An emergency call button showed up on the screen.

I realised I could dial emergency services even if it was locked!

With shaking hands, I pressed the button. The line rang. A lady operator answered.

“Help me,” I whispered.

“Hello?” she said. “Are you still there? Can you tell me the nature of your emergency?”

“I need help. I’ve been abducted.” I whispered.

But my voice was drowned by the music. She could not hear me.

“If you cannot speak, please cough or make a noise to indicate you need help,” she said.

I coughed quietly, too scared Toby and the driver would hear me. But she could not hear the cough because she repeated her request.

I wanted to cry when I thought she had hung up. Then an automated voice asked me to press some buttons on the keypad to confirm this was a genuine emergency.

My hand was shaking so much. I pressed the buttons, but then the van jerked over a speed bump and the phone fell from my hands and slid to the back of the van.

I stretched myself flat on the floor to try to reach it, but it was just beyond my fingertips.

I froze when Toby started shifting around, looking for something in the glove box.

Stretched out on the ground, I was terrified he would see me if he turned around to look for whatever it was he wanted.

When he sat back in his seat, I immediately huddled against the back of the driver’s seat again, tucked out of his line of sight.

We drove for fifteen more minutes and then the van came to a stop. When they turned the radio off, I heard no noises at all outside. No busy traffic or the sounds of people.

Weren’t we in London? I thought in panic.

I dared not raise my head to peek out of the windows.

When the driver and Toby got out of the van, I moved hastily to the back doors and got ready to shove them hard. If they opened the doors, I was going to take them by surprise, and make a run for it. I crouched there, waiting, praying this would work.
