Marco held me, gently, kissing my temple, telling me everything was going to be alright. Telling me he’d had all the locks changed in my apartment, installed a full security system, hired a whole new team to take care of me and Mom.

“You did?” I gulped.

“Of course. You are carrying my child. I will not have you put at any risk.”

He was doing it all for his child. I cried harder.

Slight panic came into his voice. “What is it? Is something wrong with the baby? Are you feeling unwell?”

I shook my head. “No. I don’t want to go home!”

“We will go back to the hospital at once!” he said, his voice raw.

“No, I don’t need the hospital.”

He looked worried. “You’re scared? Then come and stay with me, amore. Please. I promise I won’t pressure you to get married. Not yet. You can take all the time you need. We’ll take care of you.”

My tears turned into ugly crying. I buried my face in my hands. When he tried to part them in panic to look at me, I wouldn’t let him.

“What is it, carissima?” he said, his voice tortured.

“I don’t want to break up!” I gasped the words out between sobs.

Stunned hope came into his face. “You want to be with me?” he said in a raw, tortured voice.

“But you’re throwing me away. You don’t even care!” I wailed.

He gathered me into his arms, kissed my cheeks, my temple, my forehead, then tenderly, my mouth.

“I would never throw you away. I thought this was what I wanted. It’s been agony for me, the thought of leaving you here! I need you. Please come home with me.”

“No! How can I? You’re going to do God-knows-what to those men. I just want them gone to prison. I just want them gone from our lives so that I don’t have to worry the police will turn up and arrest you and then you’ll die of a heart attack in prison all alone!” I wailed.

I punched him limply in the chest.

He gathered me in his arms and held me close. Rocked me. “Is that all? I swear, I’ll do what you ask in the future, amore. I’ll take care to listen to you. I’ve already handed them over to the police,” he admitted.

I drew back, stared at him blearily through tears. “You have?”

He nodded solemnly. “I have. And I’ll make damn sure the court keeps them locked up for life, and then we’ll forget all about them. Is that what you want?”

I gulped, nodding.

“Good, because I can’t bear to be without you one moment longer,” he said. “I love you.”

My mouth dropped open. “You do?”

“Yes. How could you doubt it? You and I are meant to be together. I will always love you, my little bird. Always.”

“Oh Marco! I love you too.”

I had not known until this moment how much I had craved to hear those words from him.

I climbed onto his lap, steering wheel be damned, and kissed him like I had wanted to kiss him for all those awful lonely nights I had suffered without him. Kissed him like I never wanted to let him go. Kissed him like my life depended on it.

He kissed me back, lips hot on mine, hands grasping my waist hard, lips dragging down my throat to my breasts, until my back hit the horn button and sent it blaring.

Laughing, I dragged him out of his car, ran with him into my apartment, threw him down onto my bed and straddled him, hands working on his shirt buttons as I kissed him.
