Toby knew that people like the DeAngelis’s had apartments in the building above the club. Many of the most important members did, for private parties that the club would send as many girls to as they liked. They used them for business as much as for pleasure.

It had sounded sordid to me when I first started working here, until I saw how Nina, our boss and club owner, and the security team took care of the staff, and how they only hired the savviest of women as dancers and hostesses.

And I certainly had not found it sordid the night Marco had carried me up there, whispering hot words in my ear, his muscled arms possessive around my waist.

But now the sordid feeling was coming back to me.

“You don’t have to sleep with him,” I whispered to my reflection.

My cheeks burned at the mere thought. What if he wanted to forget our last encounter? What if he got mad about me approaching him?

What would I do if he sneered and turned me away?

It seemed laughable now that Toby had said all I had to do was get him up there with his phone, somehow manage to steal it, and authenticate the text message. That was all. Then I could make my excuses and walk out.

As if it would be so easy.

But I had no choice.

I swallowed hard, gave myself one last forceful look in the mirror, and hurried down to the club floor, praying Marco hadn’t already left.

Chapter 5

BETH

Tap, tap, tap, went my shoes on the steps, banging like a death knell.

I had shut the idea of what I was about to do out of my mind. I would worry about it when I came face to face with him.

I winced, imagining the look on Dolly’s face. On Susie’s and Viv’s. They would be stunned I was doing this. Outraged even.

I’d lose my job, of course. I’d already had my one warning. But at least I had a new job already lined up, thanks to Jonathan Landry, an old friend of my dad’s.

That gave me a small comfort. Just in case I screwed the whole thing up, at least I had a backup plan.

I reached the downstairs corridor leading to the main club floor and nearly tripped on the last step when I saw Marco ahead of me. He was talking on his phone, keeping his voice low.

That he’d come out here to make a private call was obvious by the perfunctory and irritated glance he cast at me, as if he wished I would hurry the hell up and leave.

I stood there, staring.

His eyes narrowed.

I crossed my arms over my chest, tilted my head and raised my eyebrow, as if to say this was my damn club and he was the one where he shouldn’t be. This area was off limits to all but staff, after all.

An amused smirk tipped up the corner of his lips.

“I’ll call you later,” he said briskly into his phone and hung up.

My heart raced as he stalked closer to me.

“Want something?” he said, his voice playful and predatory all at once.

My lips pressed together nervously, and I had to force myself to relax them. He was actually talking to me as if I was a real human being.

“Maybe,” I said, my voice soft and somehow sultry, though I had not meant for it to be.

His eyes seemed to darken even more. His expression turned hungry. That dangerous smile turned almost primal.
