With her curled against me, I let my eyes drift shut for a moment. Just a moment, I told myself.

Chapter 7

BETH

I lay curled up against him, my head tucked under his chin. My hand on his chest felt the rise and fall of his breath, and my eyelids slowly drifted shut. My body was heavy, completely relaxed for the first time in a long time. It had been breath-taking. Better even than last time. I felt… I felt as if I could stay here forever.

He abruptly pulled away and got out of bed. I kept my eyes closed, too embarrassed now to get up and say anything to him. I heard him put something down on the bedside table. The money, I realised in mortification. Hot indignation spread up my neck to my cheeks.

“No, I don’t need that,” I said.

He frowned. “Don’t worry. You won’t lose your job. I’ll clear what happened with Nina.”

I stared at him, feeling sick. “Is that what happened last time?”

He looked confused. “Last time?” And then his expression darkened. “You’ve done this before? With who?” He barked the last words, looking furious.

“Nobody. I’ve never been with anyone else here.” My cheeks blazed.

My gosh, he really didn’t remember the last time we had been together. He actually didn’t remember!

Which was… weird. He had not seemed one bit drunk.

“Good,” he snapped, checking his phone. “You sleep with anyone else here and I’ll find out about it. So don’t even think about it.”

He left the room without a further word. As if this had been a business transaction. I supposed, for him, it was.

I heard him open a door out in the corridor. Another bathroom, I assumed. He probably expected me to use this one, then show myself out swiftly. No messy aftermath. That’s what The Bordello Club was all about.

I was trembling, on the verge of tears suddenly. Me leaving that other morning had been the right decision after all. So stupid of me to have wished I had not, to have wondered what would have happened if I had stayed.

I brushed my tears away angrily. Why the hell was I feeling like this? This was a business transaction for me too.

Crap! I had forgotten all about that.

Shaking from a sudden rush of adrenaline, I hurried to where he had left his phone on the side-table across the room.

My heart was racing. He had picked the phone up just now. There was a chance it might still be unlocked.

To my stunned relief, it was!

I grabbed my own phone from the pocket of my discarded dress. And texted Toby quickly.

Beth:Send it now!

The verification text arrived immediately on Marco’s phone. I clicked the link and downloaded the authenticator app. My heart was pounding loudly in my chest as it downloaded, seeming to take a full minute.

When I heard a noise outside, my heart nearly stopped. Someone moving around in the apartment. Marco couldn’t be out of the bathroom already?

I had dropped his phone in shock. With trembling hands, I snatched it up again, and dropped it on the sideboard.

I was frozen on the spot, waiting for Marco to come in, convinced he would somehow know what I’d done.

He did not come. And there was no further sound outside. I went to the door. Looked out. The corridor was empty.

Hurrying back to his phone, I swiped the screen to prevent it from locking. With trembling hands, I used my phone to text Toby.

Beth:It has downloaded.
