I wrapped my arms around Marco’s neck as he carried me into his house. But there would be no peace. The police pulled up in a car even before we had shut the door behind us.

Marco ignored them. Walked straight into the nearest lounge and kicked the door shut behind us. I heard his security guy, Jacob, keeping the police at bay.

As Marco set me down on a couch, Jacob poked his head in. “They’re insistent,” he said quietly. “They won’t leave.”

“Then they will have to wait,” Marco barked. “Where are those doctors I called for?”

“I’m fine,” I kept telling Marco. “I just want to be left alone.”

“Not until you get checked over.”

Now he had set me down, he seemed unable to look at me. He paced, kept checking his watch.

He seemed relieved when two doctors arrived minutes later, both seeming surprised to see the other.

Each examined me, prodded my bruised throat, took my blood pressure, and gave their separate opinions. That I should be fine. That Marco should keep an eye on me and call them if he was concerned.

“We can prescribe some painkillers,” one said to him, not me. “Is she on any other medication?”

“She’lljust take some normal painkillers later,” I muttered, too tired to be annoyed. I would google which ones were safe for pregnancy later.

Then it was the police’s turn.

“Five minutes,” Marco barked at them when he reluctantly let them into the room. And only because I had said I wanted to speak to them.

I had expected regular cops, but they were two detectives in plain clothes. A man and woman. They told me their names, but I promptly forgot them.

Marco stood glowering over them as they asked their questions, though the woman, who seemed in charge, had asked him to leave.

I repeated to them what I had already told Marco earlier.

“Jonathan was an old friend of my dad’s. He confessed he killed Dolly because she knew about his involvement in my dad’s fraud case. Jonathan was behind the money-laundering. He said he blackmailed my dad into doing it for him…”

The next part was hard, but I forced myself to continue.

“He said that he’d made Dolly sleep with my dad when she was underage and had taken a video of it.” I stared at the ground, too ashamed to meet anyone’s eyes. “I guess Jonathan was afraid that Dolly would tell me about it.”

“Why would he be afraid of that?” the woman asked sceptically. “Our information is that you and Dolly had worked at The Bordello Club together for years. Why the sudden need to kill her?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted.

It made no sense to me either. Even if I had found out and gone to the police with it, what were the chances they would have believed me without proof? They were hardly likely to trust the word of a hostess like Dolly.

The two cops exchanged a glance.

“Why don’t you askhim?” I said bitterly.

Suddenly, it hit me that Jonathan would deny it all. That the only thing they could get him for was strangling me. If that.

“You can’t let him go,” I said in distress. “He confessed. He really did. And he tried to kill me!”

“Were there any witnesses?” she asked.

My mouth dropped open. No. Of course, there hadn’t been anyone else in the room watching him strangle me.

“Me,” said Marco coldly. “I saw him strangling her. He had locked the door. I had to break it down to get in there.”

He looked downright menacing. The male cop looked a little nervous, but the woman didn’t flinch.
