He raised a brow. “For real?”

I shrugged. “Probably not.”

His eyes narrowed. Clearly, he had expected me to laugh it off, like it was a joke I had played to irritate my mother.

“That girl who was murdered in my apartment at Bordello,” I growled.

“What about her?”

“The bastard who did it just tried to strangle Beth.” My jaw clenched. “I want him dead.”

Now I had said it, I knew it was true. I wanted that piece of shit dead. He had nearly killed what was mine.

Sandro knew what I was asking without me having to say it.

Neither he nor I were in the business of killing just anyone. Our uncle was the head of the family, and his rules required that everyone in the family kept their hands clean of murder.

If you wanted anyone dead, he would arrange it for you. Some anonymous face who knew nothing of the family’s business would do it. Someone who could never point fingers at us if they were caught by the law.

Sandro had poured himself a Scotch, but hadn’t bothered to drink it. It sat untouched on the small table next to him. He leaned forward, steepled his fingers, furrowed his brow.

Then shook his head decisively. “You can’t. You do this and Uncle Gianni will drag you back into the fold.”

I ground my teeth. “Maybe it would be worth it.”

“The hell it would,” said Sandro sharply. “You are too used to being your own man, managing your own business. You don’t want to work for him. You don’t want to do the things he’ll make you do. He willownyou forever, and your mother would never forgive you.”

I scowled. Shook my head. “That pig Landry is going to make bail,” I spat. “No way is that detective going to charge him with Dolly’s murder when there is a chance she can come after me for it.”

He nodded. “Sounds about right.”

“No way am I letting him walk free after he nearly killed—” I cut myself off.

The corners of Sandro’s lips tipped up. “Your woman? Beautiful Bethany the bartender.”

“Watch your mouth! You don’t know anything about it.”

“I know that I’ve never seen you worked up over some piece of ass before.”

My hands were around his throat before I knew what I was doing. Sandro didn’t even try to fight me off. He only laughed, howling with mirth as I choked him.

I stopped.

“Fuck you, Sandro.”

He wiped the tears of laughter from his eyes. “Oh man, your mother is not going to like this. She thought she practically had you walking up the aisle with Maya Lakshmi. How’s your business deal with Arjun Lakshmi looking, by the way?”

Dead in the water, was how. “Screw it,” I muttered.

Sandro’s expression sobered. “Man, you can’t be serious?”

I tried to shrug it off. “Maybe I am.”

“And about killing Landry?”

“That too.”

He looked at me thoughtfully. He knew the only man I had ever killed was the pig who had murdered my father, and that evil bastard had had it coming.
