“What the hell is that? That’s not me!”

He smirked. Skipped the video forward. “You should see this bit when the third guy—”

I slapped his hand away, sending his phone flying.

He scowled. Went to fetch it.

“You delete that filth right now,” I yelled. “That’s not me. How the hell did you make it? What the hell, Toby!”

He smirked. “Deepfake. But who’s going to believe it’s not you? You work at a club called Bordello. Do you think I should send it to your new boss at your fancy new job?”

I was shaking. I felt sick. “Don’t you dare! You’re obscene.”

He laughed. “Chill. It’s no big deal. Just do what I’ve asked and I’ll delete it. I promise. No one will see it. It’s only on my phone right now. It’s not like it’s up on the internet permanently or anything…”

His voice trailed off as he gave me time to absorb the threat. That bastard.

Tears brimmed in my eyes. “Even if I wanted to do what you said, I can’t. No one is allowed to keep their phones on them in the club.”

He shrugged. “So get chatting with him. Get him to leave with you tonight and—”

“Leavewith him? You want me to chat him up, pretend I’m one of the hostesses? Then what?Snatch his phone?”

He burst into laughter. “No, of course not. You can’t let him know what you’re up to. Distract him and grab his phone for a second when he’s not looking. You just need to click a few buttons. The deal will go ahead. He won’t lose anything, but we’ll gain everything.”

I shook my head, unable to believe that good-boy Toby Paget-Stanley was even talking about this crazy idea.

“You’re mad. What are you thinking, Toby? Please, just talk to him yourself. Convince him to invest. I can’t do it.”

I pushed him away and headed back towards the club.

“Maybe I’ll send the video to your mom,” he said.

Gasping, I stopped walking, and turned to him, my face full of contempt. He knew what that would do to my mom. It was her worst fear. She knew I worked at the club, but I had assured her I only served drinks. And that was true. That video would break her heart.

“You bastard.”

He had the decency to look ashamed of himself. But a stubborn look came over his face. “I can’t do it myself. The minute I talk to him, he’ll look into it. And he’ll find out I’ve used his name without his permission. You don’t mess with a guy like that. He’s connected. It won’t be good for me.”

Suddenly, he looked like a pathetic boy, one who was out of his depth. My expression hardened. I felt sick.

“Yeah, and will it be good for me to get this guy drunk and pull a stunt like that? What will he do if he catches me messing with his phone?”

“That’s not my problem. You better make sure you don’t get caught.”

In the dim amber light of the streetlamp, he looked like a stranger. Like those scathing people, supposed friends of my parents, who’d stopped talking to us after Dad’s arrest. Like he thought I was pathetic.

“Twenty grand,” he said, before I could walk away. “Plus, you get to not be labelled a cheap whore forever. I’ve seen the way the guy looks at you. Fancies the pants off you. And it’s not like you haven’t screwed him already.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. “What?” I said faintly.

“Marco DeAngelis. Don’t think I don’t know you screwed him after we broke up. Did he leave you a good tip? Bet it was enough to buy another week of that nurse’s wages. Is that why you did it?”

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t believe he knew about Marco. I threw him a look of loathing.

He leered at my strappy dress. “You’re already dressed the part. It’s not like you’re a virgin. Easy money.”

“You bastard,” I whispered.
