He opened a contract he needed to look over, but the only thing he saw was the way she’d recoiled from him. He’d hurt her.

As if she hadn’t had enough pain for one day, he’d piled on.

And for what? Because he was attracted to her?

That’s not her fault.

He just needed to stay away from her.

As soon as they landed, he’d get her settled in a cabin. Tomorrow, he’d spend time with his daughter and hit the charity ball, and then the next day, he’d head back to the East Coast.

By the time he got back from visiting Ross LaRoux’s agent, she’d be gone.

There you go.

Problem solved.

Jaime was awakened by the bounce of his mattress.

Apparently, his dad brought Kinny home on his way to work. The commercial herd was calving, so he’d be out early.

The duvet lifted, and cold little fingers tickled the soles of his feet. “Are you up, Daddy?”

“No.” He’d had a hell of a time getting to sleep. After they’d landed, he’d stopped at the grocery store to make sure Grace had what she needed for her short stay. He’d helped bring in the groceries and then checked to make sure the place was habitable.

By the time he’d gotten to his parent’s house, Kinsley was already asleep. He’d stayed longer with Grace than he should have.

Because he liked her. And it made him realize something. He didn’t know the women he fucked. He didn’t know the players on his team. Outside of his family, he didn’t spend time getting to know people.

“Why are your toes so hairy?” His daughter tugged on the fine strands. “Mine aren’t.”

“You know why.” His voice sounded rough with sleep. “I’m part bear.”

She grinned. “No, you’re not.”

“Yeah. I am.” With a roar, he reared up. She tried to scramble off the bed, but he caught her by the legs and dragged her onto his lap. Enfolding her in his arms, he nibbled her neck.

As she writhed and wriggled, she let out a squeal of delight. “Don’t eat me, Daddy! Don’t eat me!”

“Of course, I’m going to eat you. I’m a bear.”

“You’re not a bear! You’re my daddy.”

Tossing her onto her back, he lifted her nightgown and blew raspberries on her belly. “Now, do you believe I’m a bear?”

“No.” She giggled as he tickled her.

“Say it. Say I’m a bear.”

“You’re…not…” She had a hard time catching her breath. “A bear!”

He got out of bed and threw his arms open wide, growling as he towered over her, wiggling his fingers in a threat to continue tickling her. “Do you believe me now?”

Eyes shining, she shrieked, “Yes.”

“Say it.”

“You’re a bear! You’re a bear!”
