That must be exhausting. Well, he’d made an offer, and since he didn’t live there, she couldn’t reject it. “I’m not going to say no,” she said. “But you were very clear with your expectations. You’ve been incredibly generous. I don’t want to do anything that will make you uncomfortable.”

He was acting so nonchalant it was almost funny.

Until she realizedwhathe was suppressing—his feelings for her. But why couldn’t he let himself have a little fun? It was just for a summer. Even as she thought it, though, she knew the answer. With them, it was explosive. And not just their sexual chemistry.

Their connection was crazy—such a rush of energy between them.

We could be so good together.

“I wouldn’t offer if I didn’t think it would work. I’m never there, so I don’t see a problem.”

“That’s true. And honestly, I’m not in a position to be polite about this. I do need the space, so thank you. I appreciate it more than you know.”

He rapped his knuckles on the counter as if to conclude their conversation. But he didn’t go anywhere. “How’s it going?”

“It’s fantastic. But…” Her cheeks went hot. “You won’t believe who’s been coming by my truck every day.” She paused. “Lorelei Calloway.”

“No shit.” He broke into a big grin. “She heard you singing?”

She nodded. “I’m mortified.”

“Why? You have a great voice. If I closed my eyes, I wouldn’t know the difference between the two of you.”

“At first, she thought I came to the festival to get discovered. Can you imagine? She actually dressed up in disguise and waited in line so she could confront me.”

“That kind of shit probably happens to her all the time. She’s been famous since she was a kid. You explained your situation, right?”

“What? That I’m a runaway bride whose ex wiped out her savings so I’m spending the summer in a tiny cabin on the ranch of the groomsman I banged?” She laughed. “No, I didn’t really get into all that.”

A dark pink stained his cheeks. “Yeah, you could probably skip the runaway bride part. The banging’s good, though. That’ll get her attention.”

She laughed, and there it was. All that energy came flooding in, hot and electric. This is why he keeps the door locked so tightly. We’re combustible. “Her tour bus is right behind me, so I haven’t been singing as much. It’s too weird when she’s the artist-in-residence.”

“Hey.” He leaned closer and cupped her chin. “Does singing make you happy?”

Mesmerized by the intensity of his gaze and his commanding tone, she could only whisper, “You know it does.”Slide that hand lower, scrape those calloused fingers down my neck. Reach into my shirt and cup my breast. Just like you did a week ago.

Every single thing you did to me, I want you to do again.

Her body went up in flames.

She had to stop doing this. He’d made himself clear. He didn’t want a second round. Forcing herself back to the conversation, she said, “Even better, it draws the customers. You should see the line for my truck.”

“I did.”

“You’ve been there?” Had he come specifically to see her? A thrill ripped through her.

He shook his head. “You’re on the cover of theGazette. My mom drove around town and grabbed as many copies as she could find.”

“For me?”

He nodded.

“Are you serious? That’s so sweet. Why would she do that?”

“She likes you.” His gaze cut away.

“I feel like there’s more you’re not telling me?”
