Make it end.

“I don’t believe that, Bale.” My head shook even though I was positive I wasn’t moving it. “They can’t bury me without exposing themselves and—”

“They’re going to kill you, Pepper. That’s how they’re going to take your business. And they’re going to make it a seamless transition, stepping right in the second you’re gone.”

Fear pounded through my body.

It made everything inside me shake.

Churn.

Sting.

If my mouth opened, I wasn’t sure if air or words or bile would come out of it.

I circled my arms around my stomach, adding pressure while I whispered, “They’re going to take me out? Like I never even existed?”

“It’s that easy.” His eyes softened in a way that confirmed every fear. “Trust me.”

I was sure I was hooked up to some type of motor because I couldn’t stop trembling.

The questions poured in so fast that I couldn’t get them all out.

My brain was a cloud of confusion.

Disbelief.

How?

Why?

“But what about my staff?” I choked. “They’ll know—”

“They can be bought.” His grip tightened on my throat. “Everyone has a price. Don’t forget that.”

I pulled his fingers away and took a step back, pacing from the small kitchen to the couch, trying to piece this all together.

My members. They would know I was gone. They would care. They wouldn’t want some stranger coming in, handling their payments, their personal information, knowing their identity in a club that was as exclusive as mine.

Scarlett would look for me. She’d alert the authorities.

Although I didn’t have any family left, I had other friends. People I cared about.

Jacob.

Luke.

I couldn’t just vanish, like Bale, without someone noticing.

But would that matter?

The police would look for me, and then what would happen if they couldn’t find me?

Nothing.

Everyone would carry on with their lives.

My business would keep thriving.
