A noise as honest as the wetness between my legs.

“You might have guessed that I’m nothing like him. If you haven’t, consider this your warning.”

Things were already nothing like Jacob.

For starters, I was mentally stripping off Bale’s suit jacket and shirt—something I would never normally do.

I was unzipping his pants and dropping them to the floor.

This wasn’t me.

These weren’t the typical thoughts I had in my private room.

Why is Bale different?

Where is this attraction even coming from?

The top of his body neared my face as he leaned over me, just a subtle amount to reach the middle of my arms, but enough that I felt a hint of his weight as his chest rested on me. Because I’d seen him shirtless—both in person and on the footage—I knew the muscles etched across his chest, the patch of black hair on his pecs, the abs chiseled into his abdomen, the way his hip muscles jutted out into a V.

A body so achingly beautiful.

One I shouldn’t be yearning for.

“I can hear your thoughts,” he growled from behind me.

My body stiffened.

My eyes widened.

My breathing turned labored.

“No need to silence those thoughts on my behalf.” His lips were hovering over the shell of my ear. “I liked where you were going with them. In fact”—his mouth moved to an inch above my neck—“if you’d like me to do this naked, I can. I know you like that view.”

I didn’t know how, but he knew.

And before I could respond, before I could even think, his hands were gone.

The heat from his presence shifted from my head to my feet as he moved to the base of the table.

“Pepper,” he exhaled. His stare took a leisurely dip down my bare body and back up to my face. “Fucking breathtaking—that’s what you are. Your body is more beautiful than anything I’ve ever seen.” His head shook back and forth as his gaze covered me. “Hearing you scream and watching you wriggle are going to be the highlights of my life.” His erection became obvious, and he adjusted himself. “Look what you’re doing to me …mmm.” His hand left his hard-on. “Before we get started, you need a safe word.”

“I normally use—”

“Let me remind you again that I’m not him. Words likenormal, typical, usually—they don’t apply tonight.”

That statement couldn’t be more accurate.

“You’re right,” I whispered.

“Come. That’s the word. If I hear it, I’ll stop.”

Come.

A word I screamed endlessly while I was in this room because that was what I needed, what I wanted, what I craved during the denial.

“Are you sure that’s a good word?” I challenged. “It’s going to be painfully difficult for me not to say it.”

A smile tugged at his lips. “That’s why I chose it. I’m not only denying you of the act. I’m also denying you of begging for it. When you want it, Pepper—and you will—you’d better think carefully how you ask for it.”
