His forehead wrinkles in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about?”

I exhale loudly. Might as well just put it out there. “Sex, Spencer. I’m talking about sex. We’ve been dancing around it for months.”

“Because that’s not what this is.” He motions between the two of us. “I needed you to know that.”

I let his reasoning sink in. “I still think that we should have… done that before we talk about moving in together. Sex changes things.”

“Not us.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do know that.”

“Spencer.” I sigh.

“No. I know what’s going on in that pretty head of yours, Charlie, and you’re wrong, baby. You’re dead wrong. Sex is not going to change us, at least not the way that you think that it’s going to. It’s only going to bring us closer together.”

“You can’t be sure.”

“I’d bet my life on it.” I squeal when he reaches over and tugs me onto his lap. “You feel that?” He shifts his hips so that I can feel his hard cock pressing against my ass. “That’s just because I’m sitting next to you. Every fucking time, Charlotte. I crave you. There will never be a day that I don’t want you next to me. When we make love, that’s only going to make those feelings grow.”

I want to tell him that I’m in love with him. I want to tell him that I feel the same way, but I was worried that he wouldn’t. However, there’s still something I’m keeping from him. I won’t tell him how much I love him until there are no secrets between us. I feel as though I know Spencer well enough to understand that he’s going to be disappointed that I didn’t share that part of my life with him. He would have supported me through this process. I know he would have. I also wouldn’t put it past him to reach out and put a good word in for me. But I want this for me. I want to know that I’m the one who got me this job. Not my CEO boyfriend. The man who owns my heart.

“Charlie?” His arms that are enclosed around me tighten just a little.

“Okay.”

“Okay,” he repeats.

“I’m not saying never. I just… a little more time.”

“I can give you as much time as you need, baby. I just need you in my arms at night, your place or mine. I don’t care. We’ll work it out when you’re ready.”

I wrap my arms around his neck and hug him back. “Thank you for putting up with me.”

“Was that our first fight?” he asks.

“What? No, we used to fight all the time.”

“Not since you’ve been mine.”

I think back to the last couple of months, and he’s right. “It was more of a discussion than a fight.”

“So, no makeup sex?” he teases.

“Is that what it’s going to take? If that’s the case, I can start a fight.” I tap my index finger against my chin as if I’m trying to decide what fight I could start.

“No.” He laughs. “I just wanted to be certain that you knew that us being together had nothing to do with me needing to be inside you.”

Heat pools between my thighs at his words. “I’m glad we got that cleared up,” I tell him. I move off his lap and cross my legs, hoping the ache he’s caused subsides. I still have to go back to the office and work the rest of the day.

“My place or yours tonight?” he asks, picking up his sandwich.

“Doesn’t matter to me. I don’t have anything that has to be done at home.”

“My place then?”

“Sure. I just need to stop by and grab what I’ll need for work tomorrow.”
