“I’m a receptionist at a dentist office.”
“Do you get free dental work?” I ask.
She laughs. “Yeah. But seeing all the horror stories that I do, I’m super meticulous about how I take care of my teeth.”
“I am too, but I eat so much candy I’m pretty sure the two things cancel each other out.”
“What’s your favorite candy?” She asks between bites.
“Oh, hell, I don’t know. I’ll eat any of it. Any sour gummies are a safe bet, though. What about you?”
“I’m not a big sweets person.”
Acting shocked, I pretend like I’m going to get up and leave. “Well, this has been fun, but I don’t think this is going to work.”
She giggles so hard she snorts.
Holy fuck, that’s adorable.
“If you’re not asweetsperson, what exactly do you eat when you have a craving? Please don’t say something like kale. I don’t know that I could take it.”
“Follow me. I’ll show you.”
I stand up and go with her into the kitchen. She opens up the door to her refrigerator and points to the door.
“Whoa,” I say, shocked by the sheer number of pickle jars. Every kind of pickles you can imagine.
“Yeah.” She nods. Opening up one of the cabinets, she shows that she has a whole other stash in there. “I have a bit of a problem.”
“Do you really like pickles that much?”
“Yep. My whole life…except when I was pregnant. Then, I couldn’t stand them.”
“You’re just an interesting little bird, aren’t you?”
She laughs. “The pickle thing might be the most interesting thing about me.”
I doubt that.
We go back to the couch to finish eating all while getting to know each other better. When we finish, she says, “Tell me something about you that not a lot of people know.”
“You mean besides that I’m a serial killer?” I joke.
She gives me a monotone “ha ha”.
I think for a moment before answering. “I’m a huge nerd.”
“What. No way.”
“I’m completely serious.”
Doubt is written all over her face. “Can you elaborate?”
“I love all of the crazy fantasy movies and the books they’re based off of. Love playing World of Warcraft. All of it. Harry Potter is one of my favorite things in the world.”
“I’ve never actually sat down and watched the movies.”
“What?” I cry. “How?”
