“What do you mean? Is that some kind of inuendo?”

I laugh. “No, I mean let me take you out on a date. Arealdate.”

She seems surprised but pleasantly so. “Okay. A date sounds nice. What do you have in mind?”

“It’s a surprise,” I tell her. Truthfully, I have no idea what we’re going to do, so I guess it’s kind of a surprise to both of us. I’m sure I’ll think of something good, though.

“What should I wear? Do I need to dress up?”

“Up to you. I want you to be comfortable.”

“Hmm. Okay, I think I can find something.” She pauses a moment before asking, “So, how was your day?”

Despite all of the things that she and I do or talk about, hearing her ask me that every night is the highlight for me. No one has ever asked me that before and really cared about the answer. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy hearing the woman that I’m crazy about ask me.

Chapter Nineteen

Erin

“Youlooknice,”Christells me as I come walking down the stairs. “You hanging out with Aunt Gina and Aunt Nancy again tonight?”

“Uh, yeah,” I fib, not ready to divulge the fact that I have a date.

“Boys!” I call to all of them. “Make sure you have all of your stuff. Your dad is going to flip his lid if he needs to come back here three weekends in a row!”

He’d probably think that I did it on purpose just to be spiteful. Little does he know that the less I have to interact with him, the happier I will be.

A knock on the door gets Charlie to let out a single bark before going and hiding behind the couch. I’m pretty sure he knows the sound of Judd’s loud truck and ducks for cover. I can’t say I blame him. I want to do the same.

I open the door, and Judd looks me up and down. “You’re awfully dressed up.”

“Thanks,” I say, not sure how to respond.

“Wasn’t a compliment.”

How on Earth did I stay married to this man as long as I did?

“Oh, I wanted to talk to you,” I begin as he sighs and rolls his eyes. “Chris needs to study for his math test on Monday. His grade is slipping, and if he fails this test, he will be suspended from all sports.”

“Why did you let his grade get so low?”

How is this my fault?

“Uh,” I stammer.

“Look, I’m not having him spend all of his weekend studying.”

“Judd, I’m not saying he needs to study all—”

“It’s MY weekend. I’m not wasting my time with him doing that shit. You should have had him studying all week. Maybe you can spend your time finding him a tutor.”

Before I have a chance to respond, he says, “I’ll wait for them in the truck. Tell them to hurry up.”

Why couldn’t he have just waited in the truck the whole time?

The boys all come thundering back down the stairs a moment later and give me a quick hug before they walk out the door.

The moment I close it behind them, I can feel my blood pressure skyrocketing. So much for cooperation between parents. How hard is it to have Chris look over his study guide for an hour? But of course, I always have to be the bad guy. If Chris gets kicked off the football team, it will be my fault that I didn’t make him study enough. It will be my fault that I didn’t hire a tutor. But then, Chris goes to his dad’s, and it’s all fun and games all weekend long.
