I take a deep breath. “It’s just… look around. You are only twenty-five. You’re able to spend your money on video games and motorcycles. I can’t do that, but I don’t want to take any of it away from you.”

I cut him off. “And I came along and pulled you into my shit show.”
He runs his hands through his hair. “You’re being impossible right now; do you know that?”
“How, Tanner? How am I being impossible?” I hear myself getting emotional, but after all of the stress of the last week, I can’t help it.
“Because there’s something that you just don’t get. I would give up everything in this room if it meant I got to be with you. Fuck it all. Why do you think I’m always over at your house? Don’t you think if I cared more about this stuff, I would spend more time at home? Yes, I have spent a lot of money on stupid shit. I get it. And you know what? Yes, I will probably spend money on stupid shit in the future, but you want to know the difference? I’ll spend money on you and those kids. You talk about wanting to travel? Let’s take a trip. Anywhere you want to go—I’ll make it happen.”
“I’m not asking you for that,” I tell him.
“I know, babygirl. But don’t you get it? You don’t have to ask me to. Iwantto. I’m here, Erin. And I’m trying. Fuck, I’m trying so hard. Do you know how hard it is to keep my mouth shut when I hear Judd calling you a slut? Or when Alex asks me to go to a soccer game, and I’m told I’m not allowed to?”
Tears unexpectedly sting my eyes. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
He walks over to me and puts his hands on either side of my face. “When will you get it? I fucking love you. If all of that other shit is part of the package, I’ll gladly take it. But for fuck’s sake, I need you to stop pushing me away. I’m telling you I’m all in.”
Tears now streak my cheeks. “I love you too.”
I get the words out just as Tanner’s lips crash down on mine. In between kisses, I ask, “What about everyone who thinks this thing is a bad idea?”
“Fuck everyone else,” he growls.
Never taking his lips off mine, he walks me over to the kitchen and lifts me up onto the kitchen counter. His fingers slide underneath the dress I’m wearing and push my panties out of the way to give them easier access. His tongue dances with mine while he pushes to digits inside. I moan against his lips as he plays with that sweet spot.
His other hand lightly grabs my hair and tugs, pulling my head back so that he can kiss and bite my neck. I reach between my thighs to rub my clit, bringing myself to a quick orgasm.
When Tanner removes his fingers, he moves them to my lips. “Lick,” he commands. “Taste how sweet this pussy is.”
I do as he says, sucking on his fingers like I would his dick, and it drives him crazy. “Bedroom, now!” He orders.
I walk to where I assume the bedroom is, taking off my dress along the way. Before we get inside, Tanner pushes me against the wall, holding my hands above my head and kissing me.
Moments later, he’s still kissing me, but now slowly walking me to the bedroom. Before I get on the bed, he takes the time to remove my bra and panties. Lying naked and waiting for him, I watch him quickly pull off his clothes before going to grab a condom.

“You don’t need it.”
Crawling on the bed between my legs, he asks, “Are you sure?”

And holy shit, it feels incredible.
Tanner and I have had a lot of sex, but this is something more special than anything we’ve shared. Not only is there nothing between us physically, but it feels like some of the emotional walls that were still up have come crashing down.
