Both of us stare at each other, waging some silent war. I grab him what he needs and hands it to him. “What was I doing?”

“Speeding,” he replies while looking at my license.

“Bullshit,” I blurt. “I was driving behind Mrs. Higgens. She’s 83 years old. There’s no way anyone can speed behind her.”

“Are you arguing with me?” He asks while slowly chewing his gum.

This guy is a grade A prick.

“Just telling you the facts.”

“Well, how about we take this conversation to the station?”

I laugh.

“Something funny, boy?”

“How old are you to where you feel the need to call me boy? Must be getting pretty far up there, huh?”

Shut up, Tanner.

I hear the voice in my head, but my mouth doesn’t get the memo.

He takes off his sunglasses and looks at me. “Well, your girlfriend is the same age as me, so what does that say about you?”

“From what I hear, your girlfriend is even younger than I am.”

“Step out of the car, boy.”

Five minutes later, I’m in cuffs in the back of Judd’s cop car. I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut. And this asshole was looking for any reason in the world to stick it to me.

And of course, I gave him one.

“I’m not sure you understand that you’re playing with fire here, boy,” Judd says from the front seat.

“Why do you care what Erin and I do?” I ask.

“Because that woman has custody of my children. I will do everything I can to make sure that’s a good environment for them.”

“Why do you assume that I would ruin that?”

“Just look at you, boy. Piercings. Tattoos. Hair like a girl. No sons of mine are going to grow up and be like you.”

I don’t say anything else because what’s the point? I’m just going to piss this guy off more, and he’s likely to frame me for murder or something.

When we get to the station, he sticks me in a cell for a couple of hours until I’m allowed to make my phone call. I consider calling Erin, but I’m not sure I want her to know about this whole encounter. I don’t know how pissed off she would be at me, and honestly, she doesn’t need the extra stress.

So, I call Duke.

One thing about my brother… a lot of people around town are scared of him. It’s not just his big, burly appearance, but when he was a teenager, he committed a crime in self-defense. People always worried about what else he may do.

I figure having him pick me up might work in my favor somehow.

It’s less than twenty minutes before my brother comes storming through the door. “Where the hell is my brother?” He asks the officer at the desk.

“Who’s your brother?”

“Don’t play me. In this small town, everyone knows everyone. Tanner Samson. I want to see him. Now.”
