“I used the code.”

“You have my security code?”

“Everyone has it. It’s posted on a fan site.”

“What? What site?”

“Anything for Love, silly.” She patted the space beside her. “Come back to bed.” She glanced around the room and sighed. “I’m so glad nobody was here. That could have been ugly … for them.”

His heart pounded frantically as he watched the intruder lie back in bed as if she belonged. Angry and more than a bit scared, his mind raced, trying to devise a plan to get this person out of his room.

“You’re trespassing,” he spat out, his voice shaking.

He moved quickly, snatching his jeans from the chair in the corner and hurrying to put them on. But his movements were frantic and uncoordinated. The denim fabric felt stiff and rough against his skin, adding to his discomfort. He cursed as he struggled to get the pants over his hips. Despite his best efforts, the jeans seemed to fight back. He tugged at the fabric, pulling it up and then pushing it back down, trying to find the right position.

The intruder watched him, a smirk playing at the corners of her mouth. “Leave them off. It’s more fun that way.”

After what seemed like an eternity, he managed to get the jeans up and fastened. He turned to face Sarah and pointed to the door. “Get out,” he said, his voice low and menacing.

“That’s not what you want. You know it, and I know it.”

“I’m calling the police.” He picked his phone up from the dresser and dialed Aiden.

“Not again,” Aiden answered.

“Sorry, Sheriff.”

“I’m on my way.”

“You should get dressed,” he told her.

“I should, but I won’t. I want you to see what you’re missing.”

Red turned around and left before she could show him more. He walked shirtless and shoeless into the icy cold night. He’d be lucky if he got anything less than frostbite, but it wouldn’t be something he didn’t deserve. He’d been reckless for years, and karma was returning to kick his ass.

Flashing lights lit up the night sky in the distance.

When the cruiser pulled into his driveway, Sheriff Cooper exited and approached. “Where is she, and what’s this one’s name?”

Red sighed. “She’s in my bed, and her name is Sarah. I didn’t invite her.”

“Mmm hmm, sure.” Aiden walked into the house but stopped and turned around. “I’m not your personal security team. This is the last time I use the town’s resources to get you out of a mess. You need to hire someone.” He disappeared and five minutes later came out with Sarah, who explained to Aiden that she would be Red’s wife.

“He just hasn’t adjusted to the idea yet,” Sarah said.

Aiden walked her past Red and put her in the cruiser. “I’ll be back, baby,” she called from the cruiser’s back seat.

He had no doubt that was the truth. Aiden’s warning only added to his frustration. He resented the implication that he needed someone to protect him. But underneath his anger, he knew Aiden was right. He couldn’t keep relying on the town’s resources to bail him out of trouble. He needed to take responsibility for his actions and hire someone. The only bodyguard he knew was Valery Armstrong. Could he ask his ex-fiancée’s husband for help? He was pretty sure Valery would rather hobble him than help him, but he was out of options.

CHAPTERFIVE

Vivian woke up refreshed and energized like she had slept for a week. She rubbed her eyes and stretched her arms, feeling the soft sheets of the comfortable bed beneath her. As she got up, she heard voices coming from the living room. Curiosity piqued, she quietly approached the door and pressed her ear against it. Val’s voice rose and fell and blended in with the woodwork, but she took note of the other man’s voice. She’d recognize that voice anywhere. Few men’s voices ran through her veins like his did—deep and velvety, with a subtle rasp that sent shivers down her spine. It was a voice that commanded attention. She wanted to hate it, but she couldn’t. It was a voice that spoke to her on a primal level, igniting a desire that she couldn’t ignore.

Vivian hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should interrupt them or not. But her curiosity got the better of her, and she slowly pushed open the door and snuck down the hallway. When she peeked around the corner, she found her brother standing with his arms crossed and a scowl etched on his face as Red pleaded with him.

“I know you used to be a bodyguard, man. I need your help,” Red said, desperation in his voice. “It’s out of control.”

Val shook his head. “I’m sorry, Red. I can’t help you.”
