“You’ve got a dangerous job.”

“I’m not the one with the stalker.”

“And she believes I’m going to marry her.”

Sheriff Aiden Cooper pulled up, stepped out of his cruiser, and surveyed the scene as his boots crunched on the gravel of the narrow driveway. He took in the damage to the truck, cursive letters in blood red. He shook his head.

“Same one or another woman?”

“We think it’s Sarah.” Viv approached Aiden and held out her hand. “I’m Vivian Armstrong, head of Vortex Security.”

Aiden’s eyes widened momentarily, and Red knew precisely what he was thinking. How was this little bitty thing going to protect anyone? But Red had seen her in action, and she had more courage, not to mention smarts and reflexes, than most. She walked into his house knowing there was an intruder and didn’t hesitate to act.

“Nice to meet you.”

“Vortex, huh?”

She seemed to grow taller in front of him. It was apparent she felt a lot of pride in her position.

“Yes. Mr. Blakely has hired me to protect him from a fan.”

The sheriff rubbed his jawline. “Would you still call her a fan after this?” He pointed to the SUV.

“I’d call her a problem, and we need your help. I don’t have the authority to arrest someone, and I need to know that you’ll come if there’s a problem and we call.”

“As long as lover boy over there isn’t instigating problems, I’m happy to address real threats. Most of the time, I’m dragging women from his bed.”

Viv looked at him and smiled. “I promise that Red will be as chaste as a virgin.”

Aiden laughed. “Good luck with that.” He moved toward the truck for a closer inspection. “Bobby should be able to help with this mess.”

Red held up his phone. “I already talked to him. What he recommended is on order.”

Lucky squirmed in his arms, but Red held him more tightly until he started to yelp.

“He wants down,” Viv said.

Red placed the pup inside the white picket fence and watched as he sniffed and explored his new surroundings.

“Do you have security footage?”

Viv pulled her phone out, and several minutes later, they were watching the video of his yard, but the cameras only caught the front walk and the door. His existing system didn’t cover the side of the house.

“It’s got to be Sarah. She’s the only one mad at me.”

“This week,” the sheriff said under his breath. “It’s possible, but it could be someone else, too. Your system is inadequate.”

Viv glared at him as if to say, “I told you so.”

“We purchased additional equipment today. I’ll get it installed in the next few hours. Next time she comes, we’ll have her on camera. We will also be implementing new security protocols like not inviting people you don’t know into your bed for starters—although this one did invite herself.”

Lucky barked, and they all watched as he chased a bug around the yard.

“You got yourself a big bad watchdog, I see.”

Viv laughed. “No, he’s got himself a friend.”

“We’ll see how long that lasts. Red isn’t known for his commitments.”
