Addie came. Her body shook, her moans echoing in the small shower stall.

She stood there, letting the water pulse over her as she came down. Then, the aloneness came. The feeling of being hollow.

She turned off the water, the cool air hitting her skin. But there was one thing she excelled at, and that was picking herself up and getting on with things.

She wasn’t going to slink home to Georgia, a failure. Her mom had already shared her thoughts on Addie’s pregnancy.

You’re a fool, girl. Your life is ruined. No more dancing for you. It’ll be work, a good-for-nothing man, if one will take you on, and more squalling kids. At least your father married me when he knocked me up.

Her baby would be loved and cherished. Her baby wouldneverfeel like a mistake or a burden. She would always encourage her child to follow their dreams.

Did that mean she should let Bram in?

She bit her lip and toweled off. A part of her wanted to trust him, the part of her that was desperately in love with him.

But maybe she didn’t really know him. They’d only spent a week and a half together. Maybe this was lust, not love?

Maybe she was spinning fantasies out of nothing, like her mother always said.

No. She straightened her shoulders. She always tried to think positively. She wasn’t going to fall into her mother’s defeatist way of thinking.

Addie pulled on some panties, then a large T-shirt that she’d started sleeping in since her pajama shorts had gotten tight around her middle.

The shirt was Bram’s.

It was plain white, soft. She fingered it. He’d left it at her place the day before he’d disappeared from her life.

Well, now he’s back, and you have to decide how to deal with him.

She wasn’t going to let her heart get shattered again in the process. She squeezed some toothpaste on her brush and started cleaning her teeth.

A sound in the living room caught her ear.

She frowned, her hand stilling, and waited.

She couldn’t hear anything now, and she shook her head. She quickly finished brushing and rinsed her mouth. She flicked off the light in the bathroom.

There. A scratching sound.

Her heart thumped. Quietly, she headed out to the living area.

The lamp gave off a soft glow.

There was more scratching. Ugh, if it was a mouse, she’d scream. They were cute and all, but she did not want one scampering over her foot or living in her house. She shuddered.

It wasn’t a mouse. The scratching was at her front door. Her pulse picked up speed. What was that?

She watched the door handle move.

Now, her heart jumped into her throat and lodged there.

Someone was trying to pick the lock and break in!

Everything inside her went haywire, and she backed up.

Crap. What should she do?

She raced to the table and grabbed her cellphone. Her hands were shaking. She saw Bram’s number and stabbed at the screen. She missed and stabbed again.
