“I’ll take care of her,” the pilot said. “Maybe we’ll play cards. Ever play poker, Addie?”

“No.”

“I’ll teach you.” The pilot gave Bram a nod.

He nodded back and headed for the stairs.

“Bram.” She ran down the aisle to him and leaped. He caught her and she kissed him, a little wild, a little desperate.

He took a few seconds to kiss her back, absorbing the taste of her. “Addie, I’ll get your parents safe.” He slid his hand into her golden hair. “I’ll make you safe. I’ll always fight for you.”

“I know.” She gripped him harder. “I love you, Bram.”

The words hit him like a blunt instrument. He just stared at her. No one had told him that they loved him since he’d lost his ma and Fiona.

Addie slid down until her feet touched the floor, and smiled at him.

He couldn’t speak, couldn’t get his brain functioning. She loved him.

“Bram,” Nick barked from outside the jet. “Get your boots moving.”

“Go,” she said. “I’ll see you when you get back.”

Bram walked down the steps.Addie loved him.

He slid into the SUV.Addie loved him. Fuck, he loved her, too.

“You okay?” Nick asked.

“I’m in love with Addie.”

“Wow, not too quick, are you, Excalibur?”

“Fuck you, Wolf.”

Nick laughed. “Enjoy the ride man. The right woman is the best thing that’ll ever happen to you.”

As the convoy pulled out, Bram was smiling.

Bram quietly creptthrough the trees. The grass in the yard out the front of the small house was yellow and overgrown. It didn’t appear that gardening was a high priority for Addie’s parents.

The house was small and needed painting, but the tiny porch was swept clean, and a potted plant sat beside the door. An old truck was parked beside the building.

He didn’t like that Addie’s family had essentially left her all alone to fend for herself. It sounded like she’d been looking out for herself since she was a little girl. But he knew she cared for her parents, so he’d do his best to save them.

The air was still, no sound except the birds chirping in the trees.

“In position.” Devyn’s voice came through his earpiece. She was at the back of the house with Killian.

“In position.” Nick and Matteo were on the western side.

Shade moved preternaturally quietly beside Bram.

Bram’s gut was tight. He had a bad feeling. He kept trying to shake it off. The last time he’d felt like that, it had been on a mission that had blown up in his face.

And that long-ago night when his ma’s car had broken down.
