Her face is set like stone and her eyes never waver from mine. Memories flood through me as I stare deeply into her light blue eyes- those light blue eyes that I’ve not once been able to get out of my head.

Her dark chocolate hair falls untidily down her back and I remember how it looked curled when wet.

She frowns as I look her up and down, my gaze landing on her lips and, for a brief second, I wish I could taste them again.

Not a chance, King.

“Theodora.” I acknowledge her, her name sounding sour coming from my lips after so many years. She stands several feet ahead of me and Dax, who’s now at my side. I cross my arms over my chest, not backing away from her stare down. It’s cute how she thinks she has any semblance of control here.

A low shout interrupts us and Theodora’s eyes scan the smaller crowd that leaves to follow the sudden noise. Her father rushes over to us, his car abandoned up the gravel path, his door still left wide-open.

“Theodora, what have you done?” Kennedy Harlow shakes her shoulders, anger radiating over his whole body. She turns to look at her father, schooling a little emotion to her features.

“Sorry,” she whispers, shrugging her shoulders, barely audible but enough for us all to hear. She doesn’t sound very sorry at all.

He removes his hands from her shoulders and balls them into fists at his side. The urge to hit her seems apparent in all his features.

“You fool. This is why you couldn’t ever be involved with business, Theo. You’re reckless. You’re done for,” he spits.

Kennedy turns to me, pure disgust written all over his face. He looks down at Carlo, then back at me.

“Take her. She’s all yours. I’ll be in touch.” He walks away back to his abandoned car, without an inch of a fight for his daughter, his only child. I planned on taking her with or without her daddy’s permission anyway, but do District leaders have absolutely no love or care towards their children?

Theo doesn’t react, not even a little bit surprised or upset over her father’s dismissal.

I turn to Dax, who is eyeing Theodora up and down, a confused look on his face as he tries to figure her out.

Understandably.

She did just kill his uncle, my father and the leader of the First District, with seemingly no help.

Maybe I’ve underestimated her.

When I saw her bike pull into the dirt road through the cameras outlining the property and watched her run for cover, stalking in the shadows, I thought she was just here to eavesdrop or get inside.

Not to murder Carlo Rhivers.

If I’d thought that was the reason she was here, would I have stopped her? Probably not. Even if I’d wanted his blood on my hands. But would I have also believed she could’ve done it? Not at all.

“Get someone to sort him out.” I jerk my head at the lifeless body of my father, throwing my burnt out cigar to the ground. Instantly, a few guys get to work, making calls to take my father’s body away.

I step closer to Theodora and speak to my men, but never take my eyes off hers. Unease starts to set in at her calmness and the caveman in me wants to rile her up until she reacts.

“Put her in the car. You know where to take her.”

The two guys restraining her nod and start to move her before I reach out and put a hand on her shoulder. She glares at me and spits at my feet, and a small smile pulls at my lips, indulging in the satisfaction.

“You want to know what’s going on, sweetheart? You’re about to find out.” I wink and let go. The men walk her to the car, force her into the back seat, and lock the doors.

The Theodora I used to know is not the same Theodora being hauled away now. I know her father shuns her from any District business and she’s barely seen outside of her place since her mother’s suicide.

She might not have come here to eavesdrop, but I know she’s curious either way.

“Are you sure you want to do this, King? She could tell someone,” Dax says cautiously.

“She has no one to tell, Dax. She’s ours now. She’s not going anywhere.”

He nods and we both head back to my Cadillac. I slide into the driver’s side as Dax takes the passenger seat next to me. Turning on the engine, I follow the car ahead, heading into the depths of the First District.
