I didn’t know who it was nor did I need to know, but when I see the mess of blond waves throwing his head to the side, I step back in my stance, my fists raised in position like he taught me.

“Fuck, Rori!” Dax stutters, rubbing a large palm over his jaw.

“You shouldn’t creep up on people like that. I’m not sorry,” I reply quickly and then like nothing happened, Dax smiles.

“Neither am I.”

I look at him for a beat before he jumps in my direction, and I throw out a punch with my left hand, hitting his, falling back into our earlier routine before hitting the other. He steps around me and I follow, throwing punches with each calculated step.

On a final uppercut, Dax grabs my wrist with his hand as I hit his open palm and holds me tightly in his grip.

“I’m impressed,” he whispers and my body shivers for a completely different reason. “I’m not thrilled about you coming down here and for the second time today, alone.”

I roll my eyes and he lets go of my wrist.

“But still, impressed.”

“Thanks,” I whisper back.

“Why are you here?” he asks, stepping back and giving me some space.

“I couldn’t sleep.” I shrug and he nods in understanding. “You?” I question and his eyes burn deeply into mine.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

The intensity in his eyes makes me shift on my feet and I try to look elsewhere to let the fire on my skin sizzle out.

Dax walks over to the mats and lifts a finger, crooking it in a following command and, like always, I follow.

Dax stands on the mats facing the mirror and effortlessly stands me in front of him.

I’ve never noticed how much smaller I am compared to him until I look at our reflections. I’m small and dainty, half the size of his build. His shoulders are wide and if he were to wrap his arms right around me, I’d sink into him.

He looks down at me and drags his arms slowly over my shoulders and down onto my arms, but before I can react, he wraps me up tightly, his arms and heavy body piling his weight on, and I panic.

I shuffle and try to escape, throwing my body as much as I can, but nothing happens and Dax only clings on.

“Get the fuck off me!” I shout, still trying to pull from his grasp.

Dax lets go and stands looking at me in the reflection, and I take a minute to catch my breath.

“The next time I come at you from behind, we’re going to do a hip toss. You step your right foot back in between my legs and put your right arm under my left armpit.”

He moves my body effortlessly as he talks me through the steps and where my positioning should be, grabbing hold of my hips, and pulls them towards him. “Your hips need to be on the opposite side to mine.”

I try not to blush at how his fingers dig into my hips and try to concentrate on what he’s saying.

“Once here, lean forward and with the motion of your hips, my body weight will go over your shoulder.”

I raise a brow at him and he looks at my reflection in the mirror.

“What?” he questions, his hands still on my hips, the pressure both welcomed and foreign at the same time.

“I can’t throw you over my shoulder, Dax. Look at the size of you.” I gesture at him, then at myself. “Then look at the size of me.”

He shakes his head. “It’s not about size or strength, Rori. It’s the motion of the hip toss. I promise, after practising, you’ll get it.”

I roll my eyes and he raises his eyebrows at me.
