He looked her up and down with absolutely zero tact or apology. Then he visibly relaxed and turned to me. “Your roommate?”

“My best friend,” I snapped.

“Sierra?” Kylie asked, still not moving away from the door.

I offered her a weak smile. “How was your date?”

“Fine. How wasyours?” she bit out.

Nathaniel, being the amazingly unhelpful person he was, strode to the couch and made himself comfortable in the middle of our living room.

“Trust me, he isnotmy date.” I took a deep breath. “Look, Kylie, there’s something I need to tell you.”

Kylieand I sat at the table while Nathaniel lounged on the couch, watching the blank TV screen as if it were actually turned on.

“So there’s really no easy way to explain this. And I am fully aware of how crazy it sounds.”

“I’m not mad at you for bringing a guy here. You didn’t have to hide it from me.”

“I wasn’t,” I insisted, aware that I sounded less than convincing. “The night you found out about Aiden, before our wine-and-movie party, I ran into… some trouble.”

Kylie frowned as if I’d said something she didn’t understand. “Trouble?”

“There was this… guy, and he was fighting with this woman. It was bad, and I tried to help her. But that’s where things get weird. They weren’t exactly normal. The guy barely flinched when I shot him.”

“Youshotsomeone two days ago and just forgot to mention it?” Kylie’s voice rose into high-pitched territory, and I cringed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you. He didn’t even look hurt. Then I stabbed him with this metal stake the woman gave me, and he sort of dissolved into smoke. There was no crime scene, no evidence that he’d ever been there. Who was I supposed to tell? What was I supposed to say?”

Kylie studied me for all of two seconds before jumping up from her chair and stalking toward Nathaniel without an ounce of hesitation or wariness. “What the hell did you give her?”

His brows rose, and his expression turned dark.

She met his look with a bold glare, her eyes burning with pure rage. “I don’t know who you are, but you don’t mess with my friend.”

“Kylie…”

“I did not give your friend anything,” Nathaniel growled. “You could do her the courtesy of believing her and listening when she’s trying to explain something to you.”

“You’re telling me you also believe that people are immune to bullets and can turn into smoke when stabbed? What the hell are you on?”

Nathaniel looked over at me. “Are you two related? This is the second time in two days I’ve been accused of being on drugs.”

I gave him an apologetic shrug. “Thatisthe most logical explanation.”

He groaned, letting his head fall back against the couch. “This is above my pay grade.”

“You’re getting paid for this?” He had called it a job.

“No. Can we get back on topic? I’d like to sleep tonight without being afraid your roommate is going to try to stab me.”

“So stabbing would work on you. I’ll be sure to keep that in mind.”

He chuckled. “It wouldn’t kill me, but it would be annoying.”
