“I’m not mad at you.”

I was calling bullshit. I studied her, trying to understand what was going on in her head, but I couldn’t read her thoughts or emotions no matter how hard I tried. The bond didn’t let me feel the little things. I wasn’t even positive that I’d be able to feel the big things either. I wouldn’t know unless Sierra went through something traumatic, and I hoped that never happened to her.

I spent my afternoon finishing the romance I stole from her about a librarian who loved romance novels and the girl who asks him to be her fake fiancé while Sierra spent most of the day in her bedroom. She only came out once to add a book to the pile on the TV stand and later to make dinner.

We talked through dinner, but there was something… detached about the conversation. Sierra didn’t really seem all the way there, like her mind and heart were somewhere else.

As soon as she was done eating, she disappeared back into her room with a mumbled promise to do the dishes later.

I ignored her promise and did them myself. Something was definitely up. I had no idea what was going on with her, but I intended to find out. I’d had enough of her avoiding me.

Her bedroom door was open, but her bathroom door was closed and a sliver of light shone beneath it.

I leaned against the doorframe of her room and waited for her to come out. The door opened, and she started when she saw me standing there.

“Um, what’s up?”

I raised my eyebrows at her. “You tell me. You’ve been acting distant all day. At least give me the chance to know what I did this time.”

She looked down, not meeting my eyes. “You didn’t do anything.”

“Bullshit,” I said, done trying to be polite. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“I’m catching feelings, okay? I can’t be around you all the time without wanting to kiss you again. Without wanting you.”

My vision tunneled, our surroundings darkening out of existence. There was nothing but her. “What if I want you too?” I pinned her with my gaze. I didn’t care at the moment if it was right or wrong, if it was forbidden. I needed Sierra more than I needed to breathe, more than I needed my wings or the heavenly fire in my veins. And anyone who wanted to tell me that was wrong could go to hell.

“I thought you said we couldn’t do this,” she whispered, her chest rising and falling rapidly with shallow breaths.

“Fuck the rules. You’re more important.”

“Nate…”

I groaned. That name. It made my blood heat and my cock grow harder. I needed inside her.

That thought barely registered before I was at the doorway to the bathroom, close enough to feel her body heat radiating off her skin. She backed up and I followed. Yeah, I was stalking her, but I’d never claimed to be good. I had an angelic duty—beyond that, I was pretty much as flawed as any human.

Sierra’s back hit the wall, and I smiled. My hands landed on either side of her head, caging her in.

“You’re mine,” I whispered in her ear. “And you can’t hide from me, baby girl.”

Her sharp intake of breath sent a heady rush through me. I could taste her desire like red wine or dark chocolate. She wanted me as much as I wanted her.

I pressed my body against hers, swallowing a groan at the feel of her so close. She tensed, and I stilled. If she told me no, I’d back off. I never claimed to be good or pure, but there was a fucking line. Even if Icouldfeel her desire. Even though she’d told me she wanted me.

She rose up on her toes, and it took everything inside me to stay still when I felt her move. Her hands ran up my sides until her palms rested against my shoulders.

I closed my eyes, preparing for her to push me away. So I wasn’t expecting it when her lips touched the side of my neck, right where it met my shoulder. I let out a breath, a shudder running through my whole body.

Every one of my nerve endings lit up as her mouth roved over my neck and she pulled me down to give her better access. She kissed and licked her way up to my jaw and then the spot behind my ear.

I couldn’t hold back my groan this time. It was like she’d found a direct line to my groin.

I felt her teeth gently scrape along my earlobe, and my control snapped. My hands found her wrists, pinning them against the wall, and then my mouth was on hers. It wasn’t a sweet or slow kiss. I devoured her, my tongue exploring, stroking hers with a force that bordered on violent. I wanted to bite her lip the way she had bitten my ear, but I didn’t trust myself not to hurt her at the moment.

She moaned, and I felt her hands opening and closing where they were restrained by her head.

I gave a low chuckle, and she shivered under me.
