I knew something was wrong the second I stepped through Sierra’s front door. There was a sort of stillness that hovered over everything.

“Sierra?”

No response.

I reached for the bond in my chest, fighting to feel anything from it other than pain.

I could sense her, I knew which way to start walking or flying to get to her, but she sure as hell wasn’t in this apartment. In fact, it didn’t even feel like she was in this town.

She’d left.

“Fuck.” I slammed my hand into the closet door, feeling the wood give way under my fist.

I unlocked my phone and dialed the number Samuel had texted from last weekend.

“She’s gone,” I said, already searching the apartment for signs of where she went.

“How far away is she?” Samuel asked.

“I don’t know. Ten miles at least.”

“Which direction?”

“North.”

“Go after her. I’ll make some calls and get back to you. If I call you, pick up your damn phone.”

I was already sprinting out the back door. Sierra’s car was gone from its normal parking spot.

I didn’t have the time or the patience for caution. I made it about a hundred feet from the back door and spread my wings. My shirt was already ruined, so my wings met no resistance as I took flight.

My thoughts jumped frantically from one to the next, and each one made my chest tighten just a little bit more.

Sierra had left. I knew she was angry and hurt, but I’d clearly underestimated her reaction. I should have told her about the Nephilim law weeks ago. Fuck. This was my fault. I could have prevented this if I’d just been honest with her. If something happened to her, it would be on my shoulders.

And even if I got to her and she was fine, what then? Would she ever forgive me?

I’d been in the air for about ten minutes when I felt the bond drawing me in a different direction. I veered west, continuing to follow the pull toward Sierra. But it was getting farther away at a speed I couldn’t match.

What the hell was she doing?

My phone rang, and I dove for the ground before answering. “What?”

“Is that how you always answer your phone?” Samuel asked, his calm manner grating on my fraying nerves.

“Just answer the damn question,” I snapped back.

“Sierra’s not with her mother, aunt, or either of her cousins. I also talked to Kylie. None of them had any idea where she might be.”

“She’s on the move,” I said. “She’s getting farther away fast.”

“I was afraid of that. There’s an airport about fifteen miles north of the apartment.”

“Shit.” She was on a plane? Had she been planning this before today? The question cut deep, nearly breaking my focus on the task at hand. I couldn’t panic. I had to keep my attention on finding her.

“Meet me back at her apartment.” Samuel ended the call before I could agree.

Not two seconds later the phone rang again.
