I couldn’t bringSiren to Joriel, so I called Danielle. She didn’t ask questions when she showed up in the back rooms of Youngblood to heal Siren’s arm, but she gave me a look on her way out that let me know she’d noticed my lack of calm over the whole situation.

There would most likely be questions later, but I didn’t care.

The only thing that mattered to me at the moment was getting Siren out of the city.

She was oddly quiet on the hour-long drive to Nathaniel and Sierra’s house. She didn’t ask a single question—not about my mother or Danielle or even where we were going.

I pulled up behind a Jeep that didn’t live in the driveway. Kylie was here. Fucking perfect.

“Where are we?” Siren asked. Her voice was even and calm. She didn’t sound like she was in shock or anything.

“My brother’s house.” I took her hand and led her up to the front door.

Nathaniel answered the door. His eyes trailed over Siren, and he raised his brows at me. I knew he sensed the same thing Asura had. He knew exactly how intimately connected I was to Siren.

“I’m cashing in my favor,” I told him. Last year Nathaniel agreed to owe me a favor in exchange for my help keeping Sierra safe from Dantalion.

He didn’t exactly look happy about it, but he stepped back, opening the door wider. “Come on in.”

Siren looked up at me, probably waiting for an introduction I didn’t have time for at the moment. I dragged her into the house, closing the door behind me.

Sierra came out of the kitchen, her eyes widening slightly when she saw Siren. Kylie was right behind her, Nova in her arms.

I’d been drawn to Sierra’s best friend from the moment I met her a year ago. Her battered soul had prompted me to offer her a job at Youngblood. She’d refused, and it was probably for the best. It was obvious she could use the support, but I also saw the way she looked at me, like she hoped I was the guy who’d love away all her problems.

I watched Kylie notice my and Siren’s joined hands, saw her fantasies die. I hated the way it hit her soul, adding another layer of disappointment to a life that had been full of them, but there was nothing I could do. Kylie was still searching for answers in the wrong places, and I couldn’t save her unless she was willing to be saved.

“Do you have any other guests over?” I asked Sierra.

Kylie knew Nathaniel and I were angels. The rest of Sierra’s family, however, was in the dark.

“Nope. It’s just us.” Sierra gestured toward the dining room. “I’ll make some tea. Make yourselves comfortable.”

When we were all crowded around the table and introductions had been made, I told them about Asura being my mother and a fallen angel. I gave Nathaniel a play-by-play of the fight that had gone down in the alley behind Youngblood and told them the edited version of my suspicions that she was creating a mini army of lesser demons, leaving out the part where Joriel and I had been looking into the demon activity for months.

“I want Piper to stay with you while I look into Asura’s plans,” I finished.

“You’re hiding me away?” Siren demanded, glaring at me.

Ignoring Nathaniel’s chuckle, I returned Siren’s glare. “Your arm was a shredded mess a couple of hours ago. I’m not risking you getting hurt again.”

“I’m not staying here while you deal with your mother on your own.”

“Yes, you are,” I growled at her. I’d handcuff her to a bed before I’d let her anywhere near Asura again.

Nathaniel was literally shaking across the table from me. His wife swatted his shoulder, which only resulted in him burying his face against her neck to muffle his laughter.

“Piper, as the wife of this one,” Sierra said, gesturing at Nathaniel, “I’m going to recommend you stay here and let Sam do his thing.”

I stared at Sierra, wondering if I was hearing things. Nathaniel’s spitfire of a wife was not one to take instructions from anyone, and I really hadn’t expected her to be the one to take my side on this.

“You don’t want to be his liability, trust me.”

Nathaniel’s laughter ceased instantly, his face going serious. I knew they were remembering the fight with Dantalion that had nearly killed them both and had cost Nathaniel his wings. According to Sierra’s explanation of what had happened, Dantalion had used Sierra to control Nathaniel.

As if she sensed the somber attitude, Nova squirmed in Kylie’s arms, reaching for Sierra. I was beginning to wonder if the kid ever cried.

Siren looked around the table and her shoulders slumped, the fight going out of her. “I don’t like this,” she whispered.
