He looked between the three of us as if trying to figure out how he’d ended up in this situation, then handed over his phone. “You can’t access my bank accounts from it.”

Sierra rolled her eyes. “I’m not interested in your money.”

I looked over her shoulder as she studied Hayden’s calendar. It was an absolute mess of events and notes.

“Do you have any organization system?” Sierra asked. “Because I can’t read this, and I used to keep track of twenty employees’ schedules.”

A muscle jumped in Hayden’s jaw.

“You have three different events set for noon tomorrow,” Sierra added. “Are those maybes or did you triple-book yourself?”

“Shit.” Hayden gripped the back of his neck and closed his eyes.

Sierra gave him a pitying look. “I’m getting the feeling you can’t read this mess either. You need a new system.”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

“Watch it,” Nate growled.

Sierra placed her hand on her husband’s thigh. “It’s okay.” She handed the phone back across the table. “I can’t fix that in the amount of time left at this party. Sorry.”

Hayden stared at her as if she had three heads. “You wanted to fix my calendar?” he asked slowly.

She shrugged. “Thought it’d be fun to organize, but you need to rearrange meetings and do way more than I can fix from here in a couple of hours. Good luck with your sister and your twelve o’clocks tomorrow.”

Hayden opened and closed his mouth a couple of times. He looked sort of stunned.

“Can I hire you?” he finally asked.

“No,” Nate said flatly.

Sierra leaned forward, away from his touch, and gave him a mom stare that would have scared every one of my brothers and my father at once.

Nate didn’t so much as blink. He brushed a lock of her hair behind her ear and trailed his fingertips over her cheek. “You said you didn’t want to go back to work until Nova was a couple of years old.”

Sierra pulled his hand away from her face, holding it in both of hers. “I’m aware of that,” she said calmly. “Hayden, I have a baby that needs me far more than I need your money.”

Hayden looked between Sierra and Nate a few times. “We can come up with something that works for you and your family.”

Nate narrowed his eyes at Hayden. “Why would you do that?”

“Because I’m drowning and need someone who’s on my side, who can’t be bought, and who isn’t going to betray me to my father.”

I could sympathize with Hayden. I didn’t have to watch my back when it came to my family, but I knew Papa had had more than his fair share of untrustworthy assistants in his pop-star days.

“How do you know I won’t do that?” Sierra asked.

“Because my father’s an asshole who only has his money and status going for him. If you don’t need his money, I sincerely doubt you’ll be tempted to work for him over me.”

“We’ll talk,” Sierra said. “Maybe we can work something out.”

Nate’s phone buzzed, and I saw Joriel’s name flash across the screen before he answered. His expression went carefully blank a second later, and he signaled something to Sierra.

She nodded and took Nova back from me. “We’ll be back. Don’t leave the party without us.”

They walked away and I was back to sitting alone with my untouched glass of bubbly… and the now-silent Hayden who was typing on his phone and generally ignoring me.

My gaze drifted to where Orlando had his arm around Isabelle’s waist. She was showing off her diamond to a woman I didn’t know.
