“None of that explains why you’re in the pool.” I glanced down at her soul, looking for some clue as to what was going on in her head, but I barely saw it before she slipped beneath the surface of the water, sinking straight to the bottom.

And she didn’t come up.

“Fuck.” I growled, diving into the pool, which was not nearly as warm as I’d expect from the rich hoity-toities who owned this place. How long had Siren been in here? And what was her damn obsession with swimming in freezing water in her clothes?

My fingers found her waist, and I pulled her up.

“What the hell are you doing?” I snarled at her.

She shoved against my chest, but I wasn’t budging. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

Good question. If only I knew the answer.

“I can’t keep up with you,” she whispered.

“Neither can I,” I told her honestly. I wasn’t used to feeling out of control, but she threw my whole world off-balance.

Everything about her lured me in, tempting me to break the rules andfall, just like I’d feared from the time I was five years old. A part of me wanted to hate her for it, but even I could admit it wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t done anything except be herself.

I stared down at her, watching as she eyed me warily. I needed one last kiss; then I’d get out of her life. I’d find the strength to leave her alone if I could just have one more taste.

Her hands were still on my chest from her attempt to push me away, but they did nothing to stop me from pulling her closer.

She wasn’t fighting me.

Dammit.

I needed her to turn away, to tell me to leave her alone and make me believe that it was what she really wanted.

“Sam.” My name sounded like a plea on her lips, and it snapped what was left of my control.

My mouth took hers, savoring the feel of her perfectly full and soft lips against mine. I teased at the seam with my tongue, urging her to open for me. She let me in without one bit of hesitation, and I groaned as I explored every inch of her mouth, taking my time memorizing everything about her.

Her fingers curled in the fabric of my shirt, holding me to her as she kissed me back.

I fisted the material at her waist while my other hand trailed up her back and into her hair. God, she tasted unlike anything else in the world. I moved from her lips to kiss down her neck, sucking and nibbling at her skin while she gasped and moaned.

It took more effort than I’d ever admit to anyone to pull away from that kiss. “I still can’t give you what you want,” I told her softly. “Nothing’s changed—I’ll never marry you or give you children.”

She let go of my shirt. “Why?”

I shook my head. “Because I can’t. I’m sorry.”

When she pushed against my grip, I let her go, watching her swim away from me. She climbed the ladder out of the pool, her wet dress clinging to her body and highlighting her every curve.

My dick hardened, straining against the zipper of my pants. Fuck me. She was everything I could possibly want… except that she was human.

She bent to pick up her purse, and I sank my teeth into my lip to keep from groaning out loud. I was starting to think she was purposely trying to torture me.

“You can’t come back inside,” she said as I dragged myself out of the pool behind her.

“Why not?”

She waved a hand between us. “Because it’s going to be hard enough to explain why I’m wet. The last thing I need is everyone knowing you took a dip with me.”

Her words cut more than I’d expected. “So I’m your dirty little secret now?” I said in a low voice.

She shivered, and I couldn’t stop myself from reaching for her. She flinched away from my touch, shaking her head. “I can’t do this. It’s time for me to move on, Samuel.”
