“Fifty bucks says you’ll have another offer within ten minutes.”

“I’m not making bets on that.”

“That’s only because you know you’ll lose.” She smirked before heading off to serve another customer.

I took my phone out of my back pocket and pulled up my family’s group chat.

Me:Date was a bust tonight.

Nacio:Do I need to kill him?

Orlando:Jeez, let’s not be dramatic or anything.

Orlando:But seriously, if the answer is yes, let me know and I’ll take care of hiding the body.

Quinn:Now who’s being dramatic? She had a shitty date. That’s like a biweekly occurrence. Why are we being all *knife emoji* *coffin emoji*?

I could practically see my sister rolling her eyes as she typed that.

Nacio:Just be thankful you’re not an older brother to two sisters. You’ll never understand our struggle.

Quinn:What I don’t understand is how you are 29.

Mamma:Where are you now, Piper? Are you okay?

Me:I’m fine. Just trying to have some actual fun to make up for the painful dinner. I’m at the club.

Quinn:So you’re asking everyone to feel bad for you while you’re out dancing? Oh, it must be so hard to be you.

Nacio:Text me when you’re on your way home. I’ll come over.

Orlando:I second that statement.

Quinn:*eye roll emoji* Why did you two even bother moving out?

Orlando:You’re not fooling anyone. We know you miss us living with you.

Mamma:Quintana Amato, if you discourage your brothers from coming home again, I’m forcing you to come to the ball next weekend.

Quinn:I take it all back. Please visit tonight, dear brothers.

I couldn’t help smiling at my phone like a fool. This conversation was everything I’d hoped for when I started it.

“Now I have to know who’s making you smile like that,” Gayle said, leaning over the counter to try to see my phone.

“Family group chat,” I told her.

She rolled her eyes at me. “You have got to be the only person in Boston who comes to a club so you can sit at the bar texting your brothers.”

“My sister and mother were part of it too.”

“That actually makes it sound worse.”

I laughed. “I come here to be myself and not worry about what everyone else in Boston is doing.”

“Amen to that, sister. Also, the blond in the gray suit wants to buy you a drink. You interested or not?”

“In a drink? No. But I’ll dance with him.”
