Chapter10

Larysa

“Daniela!” I yell out her name as Danil tackles me to the floor. My jaw cracks against the tile but I don’t feel pain. Only panic and dread. “Let me go, I need to save my baby!”

I kick at Danil, taking a gamble that he’s not going to waste a bullet on me when there are so many others flying at us in all directions.

“Stay down.” He wraps his fist around my ankle for the second time tonight. He pulls me backward.

I flip over, clawing at his hands before kicking him square in the jaw. “We’re under attack and you expect me to lay here like I’m already dead? Or is it because you want to do the honors yourself?”

“You’re really pissing me off right now.” Danil yanks my ankle hard and flings me toward the stairs and out of the line of fire. Then he jumps up and darts toward the jagged pieces of glass outlining the space where the windows used to be.

“Petro, don’t let her go.”

He gives me a thumbs up, then slithers around a column and heads into the kitchen.

I try to gulp in oxygen, but instead it feels like I’m inhaling the glittering shards scattered around us on the floor. Short, sharp gasps of air scratch the sides of my throat until it’s raw. My ears ring from the flurry of popping bullets, each shot sending tremors through my body.

I clutch a hand to my heart and slide farther back against the bottom step, prayers for our safety looping though my mind and spilling out of my mouth. Danil crouches low next to a half wall, his gun pointed at the hole in the side of the house. He fires off a few warning shots around the side of the wall, and then a barrage of bullets come flying back.

“Who the fuck is shooting at us?” Hadeon scrambles across the floor toward Danil, positioned outside another shot-up window.

Gigi’s ear-splitting screams could have broken the glass if the bullets hadn’t already shattered it to smithereens. She pulls herself across the floor when more shots ring out. This time, they hit deeper. Bullets ricochet off the walls and crack the ceramic tile floor.

“Gigi, get back,” I yell.

She rolls to her side and scurries against a far wall, hugging her knees tight against her chest. Then I turn back to Danil just in time to see him jump out the window and take off after whoever just tried to kill us.

Or him.

Or all of us.

Who the hell knows.

Hadeon takes off after him.

The shooting finally stops. I don’t wait more than a few seconds before rushing into the kitchen. I grab Daniela from my brother and stroke the back of her hair as she sobs into my neck. I rub my hands up and down the back of her soft fuzzy onesie, placing soft kisses against her hair to calm her.

“What the hell just happened?” I grasp Petro’s arm, nearly choking on a gaggle of tears caught in my throat. “Who was that? Did someone follow Danil here tonight?” The image of the creepy fucker who approached me at the concert hall flashes before my eyes. “Oh my God. Or did they followme?”

Petro flashes a blank look at me.

“The stalker at the concert hall whom you guys completely missed.”

He scrubs a hand down the front of his face. “Fuck.”

“And who the hell is the dead guy? You guys didn’t leave any security inside the house, did you?”

“No. Only outside.”

“We’re clearly not as safe as you guys thought we were. We’re still sitting ducks.” I fist my hair.

Petro’s eyes flash, anger tensing the muscles in his neck. “We should have been able to stop this. We should have seen it coming.”

“Well, you didn’t. And let me guess. You didn’t find Bohdan either.”

“Uncle Isai is still out with a couple of the guys looking for him. Hades and I came back here to stay with you guys.”
