Larysa digs her fingers into my hips as she rolls hers against me, my whole hand practically inside her. Her lips part, a scream rumbling in her chest. Tremors rip through her, her pussy clamping hard around my fingers. I slap a hand over her lips before her stilted cries have a chance to shatter the air.

There will be plenty of time for crying…later.

“I want you to remember what hate feels like.” I pull my glistening fingers from her pussy and drag them over her mouth, coating her lips. “What hate tastes like.”

She stares at me, wide-eyed, her breath stilted.

“Itwon't hurtyet. Butitwill.” I lean in until our noses almost touch, ignoring the fog of lust tainting my thoughts and poisoning my body. If I give into it, this insatiable hunger for her will cripple my plans and destroy any shot I have at redemption. “Because causing you pain is the onlywayI'lleverfindpeace. AndonceI catchthe ones whoputahit on me andendedmy mother's life, yourpain will be the least of yourworries.”

Chapter16

Larysa

“I’ve been watching you for a long time. I’m a very big fan, Larysa.” The man’s voice is hoarse and gruff, like someone who’s been smoking cigarettes for way too many years. His stale breath, tinged with the scent of liquor, makes my stomach roil, exactly the way it did when I first saw him at the concert hall. “It’s too bad I have to kill you now.”

A sharp gasps slips from my mouth, panic knotting my gut. I spring up from the mattress like it’s suddenly morphed into flaming hot coals. The soft black sheet is balled up in my fists. Sweat streams down my spine, my t-shirt clinging to my skin like Saran Wrap.

My heart thunders, shuddering breaths quaking my shoulders.

It was just a dream.

I blink fast to adjust my eyes to the darkness. The only bit of light streams in from the bottom of the bedroom door.

I clutch a hand to my chest, taking long, deep breaths that do nothing to slow my throbbing pulse.

Whoever that man at the concert hall was, he can’t get to me here. Danil will protect me. He will protect both of us.

I repeat those words to myself, over and over, having little faith in their truth.

But right now, hope is the only thing in my grasp.

Silence falls around me, making my ears ring. I roll toward the edge of the bed closest to the recliner where Daniela is sleeping and tiptoe over to her. Dropping to my knees, I dip my head toward the bundle of pillows, straining to hear her soft, even breathing. I lean closer until my head presses into the thick comforter.

“Oh my God.” I jump backward, an uncontrollable tremor commanding my body. I twist quickly and dart in the direction of the door. Before I make it two steps, my toes jam into something hard on the floor. I reach my hands out in front of me and luckily, they find the edge of a dresser before I crack my head on the cool tile floor.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

“Holy shit, what are you doing down there?” I drop to my knees, crawling in the direction of Danil’s gravelly voice. “Daniela’s gone. I just went to check on her and—”

A bright beam of light hits me square in the eye, momentarily blinding me. When I can see again, my gaze falls to Daniela snuggled against Danil’s bare chest.

My jaw drops. She’s cuddled into the crook of his tattooed arm, one hand pressed against his chest like she’s claiming him as her territory. I rake a hand through my hair and sit back on my heels.

I’d be lying if I said the sight didn’t make my ovaries jump.

“You were making a lot of noise in your sleep. When she started to cry, I sat with her until she fell asleep.” He scrubs a hand down the front of his face, his eyes heavy with sleep.

“I had a nightmare.” My shoulders sag with relief. “Why didn’t you put her back in the chair once she fell asleep?”

He shrugs. “I was comfortable. Didn’t wanna get up again.”

“So you slept sitting up against the wall after you picked her up?”

His eyes narrow slightly. “I’ve been here on the floor all night, ever since you passed out.”

“Why?” I rub my hands down the sides of my arms, my prickled skin pebbled with goosebumps. I haven’t seen him shirtless since that night in Kiev. And even in the dark, I can make out the grooves and cuts of muscle that my tongue suddenly longs to lick.

“Shit can happen fast.” With his one free and, he fists his hair, a deep sigh expelling from his lips. “I take threats seriously.”
