“I can’t sleep when my feet are wrapped in the sheet like they’re mummified.”

“You didn’t have a problem with your mummified feet before.”

“I was unconscious.” I let out a frustrated sigh and crawl to the edge of the bed to yank the sheet out from the corners of the mattress. My head drops back onto the cliff of a pillow and I smile.

Freedom. Feels so liberating.

At least, for my feet.

I chew on my lower lip, restless now that I’m awake. “Are you planning to sleep on the floor in here every night?”

“I’ll sit and watch. I don’t get lot of sleep. I usually just think when I lay in my bed. May as well do it in here.”

I sit up on my elbows. I love sleep. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. “Why don’t you sleep? Too busy plotting assassinations?”

“Funny. You should actually be grateful. Tonight I’m awake trying to convince myself not to killyou.”

“Ha ha. You wouldn’t kill me. You need me.”

“I don’t need anyone. And I prefer it that way. I don’t like people because they’re always out to screw you. I’m better off on my own.”

“Maybe if you got sleep, you’d be a nicer person and people would actually like you and want to be around you instead of wanting to screw you.”

“I don’t play games and I always get what I want.”

“Yeah, but you’re a total jackass. Wouldn’t you rather be happy?”

“I’m happy when I’m by myself.”

“Well, then kidnapping us might not have been your best decision. Now you’ve got two people in your space. And one of them is pretty needy.”

He snorts. “What about the kid?”

I suck in a breath. “You’re insufferable.”

“I’m honest.”

He pauses, and a shiver slithers over my skin. He’s caustic and cruel, but at least he’s talking. My sanity is in complete upheaval right now. Imaginary eyes burn holes into my skull, foreboding danger lurking in every corner. I need to focus on something other than my survival right now and he’s it.

“And like I told you, you’re gonna learn your place or else. Tomorrow, we’re going to a funeral. Be very fucking careful or there will be two bodies buried instead of one.”

I open my mouth to respond and suck the words right back in when his chilling voice hits the air again.

“That’s not a threat. It’s a promise. You’re only here because I want justice. I have no use for you beyond that. So before you open that smartass mouth again to defy me, just remember I’m the only one who can keep you both alive. You’re mine untilI get what I want. Disobey me and you’ll suffer the consequences.”

I ball the sheets up in my fists like I’m clinging tight to a lifeline…my last and only one.

His words loop through my mind as I eventually drift back to sleep.

You’re mine until I get what I want. Disobey me, and you’ll suffer the consequences.

But instead of being consumed by panic at his harsh warning, a disturbing blend of something much more dangerous floods my insides…

Hunger. Lust.Desire.

And somehow his death threats don’t scare me nearly as much.
