That smug bastard. Why does he have to look so fucking hot in that BOSS Black suit? With his tan skin, slicked back dark hair, and sculpted muscles, he is a real-life Adonis with the sexual prowess of Eros.

And that’s where the god-like similarities come to a screeching stop.

I ball my fingers into a fist. It’s damn good for him that Daniela is between us because if she wasn’t, he’d be enjoying the taste of a knuckle sandwich.

He practically goaded me into telling him to fuck off. He pushed and pushed, knowing I’d never give him the satisfaction of telling him he owns me.

So he decided to prove it to me instead.

I cross my legs at the ankle, my pussy still tingling with the memory of his fingers driving me into the most erotic oblivion I’ve ever experienced and dared imagine. It was so hard to muster my hatred when I really wanted to melt into him like the marshmallow in the center of a s’more, which is, in my opinion, an American culinary masterpiece.

A shiver slices my spine.

It wasn’t long ago that I traveled to Tato’s funeral with Danil’s need for revenge blackening my soul. Daniela cleared the murk and helped me to focus on the good things in my life, the future I wanted to create for us. And I decided to let go of the hatred.

Danil is still clutching it like a lifeline, one he has wrapped securely around my neck.

Ilya pulls into the entrance of the funeral home a few minutes later. A line of blacked-out SUVs waits behind the hearse. I unclip Daniela from the seat and pull her into my arms. Ilya opens my door and offers a hand to help me, holding an umbrella over me with his other one. I step onto the wet pavement, not giving a damn if I look like a drowned rat walking into the viewing room.

Danil couldn’t have acted alone in his mercenary quest. From what I know of his brothers, they’re all equally ruthless and lethal. I’m sure this whole hostage situation was fabricated by all of them. And so they’re all responsible for stealing my life away from me and pulling my daughter away from everything she knows and nothing she should know, as far as I’m concerned.

Her crazy and deranged father doesn’t deserve to be part of her life, and neither do the rest of them.

I clench and unclench my fingers.

Good, Rysa. Keep telling yourself that. Maybe you’ll start to actually believe you don’t want her crazy and deranged father to be part of her life.

Daniela clings to me, her arms wrapped securely around my neck. She is in a frilly dress that makes her look like a princess…innocence in a sea of blackness. Her Aunt Tori obviously doesn’t give a shit about customary black when it comes to outfitting her newfound niece.

Danil’s back is stiff as he walks into the funeral home entrance. Ilya opens the door and he passes through without so much as turning his head to make sure we were behind him.

I scoff and mutter under my breath. “Don’t worry about us, jackass. You have Ilya to handle that.”

“Excuse me, Miss?” Ilya says.

I wave a hand in the air. “Oh, it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

Once we’re inside, Tori jumps up from one of the couches in the main living room and makes a beeline for us. She clasps her hands together, a bright smile on her tear-streaked face as she leans in to kiss me on the cheek.

“What a beautiful princess you are.” She reaches for Daniela, who eagerly launches herself into her aunt’s arms. “Come with me. There are so many people who want to meet you.”

Once they’re out of earshot, Danil grabs my arm and pulls me into a corner near the fireplace. “Don’t ever disrespect me like that again.”

“Or what? You’ll punish me? Spank me like I’m a bad girl and then finger-fuck me until I come all over your hand because you get off on exerting power and control over me?”

The words tumble fast out of my mouth before I can catch them. Danil’s grip on my arm tightens, his neck strained. A red flush creeps up the sides of his neck. “So you’ve been thinking about it.”

“Yeah, thinking about what kind of sick and twisted person would do the kind of things you get off on.”

“Last I checked, I wasn’t the one who got off.”

“Well, I faked it. So you’ve got nothing to gloat about.” Oh God, how weak and utterly fucking false.

His eyes narrow. “Your body doesn’t lie the way your mouth does, Larysa. In fact, it tells me everything I need to know.”

“No,Ihave already told you everything you need to know.” My entire body shakes with anger, fingertips numb because all the blood in my body is rushing between my ears. “I despise you, Danil. With every last cell in my body. I would love nothing more than to see you dead. It should have been you who died the other night, not your mother. You are an evil, malicious, manipulative motherfucker with zero redeeming qualities.”

He stares at me for a long minute, his face impassive, like he didn’t hear a word I just spewed. No hint of emotion flickers in his vacuous gaze, no acknowledgment of my harsh grievances. My pulse hammers, jabbing the inside of my throat.
