They just broke us again…

Because of me.

Chapter3

Danil

“You lost a lot of blood.” The nurse pushes me back against the mattress in the Emergency Room at Sunnyside Medical Center in Miami. “And you have a slight concussion from when you hit your head after you were shot. You can’t just go running out of here right now. You need to re—"

I grab her wrist. Her brown eyes widen with shock at my tight grip. “Fuck rest. Get the doctor to release me or don’t. But one way or another, I’m leaving this place now.”

My vision blurs, a red haze coloring everything in my line of sight. But it’s not a side effect of the concussion. It’s pure, unadulterated rage at the fucking balls on Olek Moroz’s family to try and kill me at my sister’s wedding. And the flames of vengeance burn bright and fierce when I think of my mother lying in a pool of her own blood because of me.

“Let me go right now or I will call Security.”

My dry laugh bites the air. “Call every fucking guard on duty. I will massacre the whole lot of them with one working arm.”

Searing pain slices into my shoulder in my struggle against the nurse, but I ignore it. She kicks a large red button next to my nightstand and an alarm blares out. Not a hot second passes before a bunch of orderlies run into the room and grab my free arm and my legs, ready to cuff me to the bed.

“Hey.” Luka’s sharp voice cuts through the shouting. He barges into the room and shoves one of the orderlies. “That’s enough. Get off of him unless you wanna lose your jobs for attacking a patient with his arm in a sling.”

Bright pink spots stain the nurse’s cheeks. “He tried to escape. And then he grabbed me, so I called for help.”

Luka fixes a glare on me before turning back to her. “Excuse him. He won’t try anything like that again.”

She smooths the front of her scrubs and brushes some hair out of her eyes. “He assaulted me.”

I roll my eyes. “Please. If I actually assaulted you, you’d know it and beg me to do it again.”

“Shut the fuck up, D.” Luka reaches into the pocket of his tuxedo pants and pulls out a wad of bills before doling them out like candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. “Let’s just forget about this.”

The orderlies exchange a look and stuff the money into their pockets. The nurse just folds her arms over her chest, her lips twisting like she’s just tasted shit.

“You can’t buy me off. I’m not going to apologize for doing my job.”

“We appreciate your help. My brother can be a little hotheaded. I’m sorry if he upset you.”

“I’m not.” My lips twist. “And I’d do it again.”

The nurse turns to scowl at me. She wants to tell me to fuck off so badly, I can see it in her disgust-filled eyes.

“Why don’t you do your job and get my doctor to sign my release?” I swing my legs around the side of the bed. “I’ll sign whatever the hell waivers you need. But I don’t have time to lie around here with fucking tubes stuck in me.” With one swift tug, I pull the tape and the IV out of my hand. Blood drips from the injection site, droplets landing on the front of my white and blue hospital gown.

“Are you crazy?” The nurse rushes over to me and slaps a Band-Aid over the wound.

“Lady, I was shot tonight. My shoulder is shredded. Pulling out an IV is like a fucking tickle.” My jaw tightens. “Get the doctor.”

Cymbals clash between my ears, my temples banging like the percussion section of an orchestra. I stick a hand to my forehead in an attempt to stop the room from spinning.

It doesn’t work.

I fall backward. My head hits the pillow and I squeeze my eyes shut. “I don’t have time for this.”

“I refuse to be liable for anything that happens to you, sicko. You are defying hospital policy!” The nurse shakes her head and rushes out the door.

“I thought she’d never leave.” I grab onto the side rail and pull myself up to a seated position again. “Get my clothes for me.”

Luka puts a hand on the shoulder that’s not torn in pieces. “Stop. You need to stay here.”
