“It’s unknown,” she says holding out the phone for me. I answer it, hoping it’s Damian but somehow knowing it’s not.

“Hello?”

“Shay Eastwood?”

“Ummm, who’s calling?” It isn’t often I get random calls. My phone number is pretty protected; I’ve only had to change it a few times over the years, but I still know better than to confirm my identity before I know who’s calling.

“This is Nurse Greene from Lakeland Hills Medical Center.” My heart drops and Veronica immediately moves to grab my hand.

The tears begin to slide down my face instantly out of fear and sadness or maybe relief that they’ve figured out that I’m important enough to him to receive this phone call. How did they find me?I sniffle. “How is he?”

“First and foremost, Mr. Hunt is alive.” Veronica lets out a sigh of relief. I try to but I hear thebutin her voice. “He was unconscious when they brought him in and he is in surgery.” She doesn’t say anything further. “Are you there Miss Eastwood?”

“I’m here,” I whisper, my mind racing and full of intrusive thoughts that have me believing I’ll lose the love of my life on the operating table.

“Can you get yourself here safely?”

I’m immediately moving up the stairs to change into more than just Damian’s t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. “Yes, I have someone that can drive me. May I ask how you knew to call me?”

“Mr. Hunt has you listed in his phone on his emergency contact as his employer.” It stings hearing myself referred to as that.

“I see.”

“We will see you soon, Miss Eastwood.” I quickly brush my teeth, shed the sweatpants, and replace them with leggings, leaving on his t-shirt as I pull on a leather jacket and grab my bag completely forgoing makeup. I grab a pair of sunglasses and a baseball hat and pull it on, knowing that it’s the most incognito look I have time for before I’m bolting down the stairs.

Kent is stationed out front and nods at me. “Cooper said he didn’t want you leaving.”

“Cooper is not the boss, contrary to what he thinks,” I tell him. “I need to be with Damian. I know you know we’re together. So, you can either drive me, or Max can.” I say pointing at Veronica’s security.

Kent drags a hand over his goatee and I can tell he’s at war over what to do. “Let’s go.”

Surprisingly, there isn’t a bunch of paparazzi around my gate but there’s a ton around the gate to the main entrance of the community because people know I live inside. “Get down. You too Veronica.” Kent tells us so we aren’t spotted through the front windshield that isn’t tinted. We make it through the crowd with only a few flashes since they’re not sure who’s inside.

We make it to the hospital in record time with Kent going much faster than the speed limit and I’m fairly certain he ran more than a few lights. The car has barely stopped before I take off running for the doors and the paparazzi lingering outside gofucking nuts.Veronica is right behind me and both of our details trail us, trying to keep the paparazzi out of our faces, but at this moment, I couldn’t care less about what I look like or who is taking pictures. I’d leak a sex tape if it could get me to Damian faster or for the promise that he is alive.

Nothing fucking matters but getting to him.

“Damian Hunt, please,” I say immediately to the woman sitting at the front desk who looks barely a few years older than me. Her eyes look up and when they widen, I briefly see the stars in them before they flit to Veronica and widen further. I take it to mean she knows who we are. I’m still wearing the hat and sunglasses but Veronica isn’t wearing any kind of disguise which makes it pretty obvious who I am.

“Uh uh,” Veronica says as if to saynow is really not the time.

“V,” I warn. “We’ll give you pictures, autographs, whatever you want. Just please tell me where I can find him.”

She nods and looks to her computer remembering herself. “Sorry, I…just a little starstruck.” She blushes. “He’s still in surgery but he’ll be in the intensive care unit. Room 400.”

I rub my chest, trying my best to keep the cracks I feel re-forming in my heart from growing. He’s fine. He’s fine. He’s fine.

I run up four flights of stairs, not having the patience to wait for the elevator and when I get there, Cooper is already standing in the ICU waiting area. “What—”

He tears his eyes away from his phone and gives me a disgruntled look. “Didn’t I tell you to wait at home?” he asks and I glare at him.

“Cooper, lay off,” Veronica says.

“Do we know anything?” I ask, ignoring the look he’s still giving me.

“Doctors won’t disclose anything to me. Since you’re his emergency contact, they’ll probably share more with you. I’ve talked to the police officer that was on the scene though; he went downstairs but he’ll be back.” I put my hand over my mouth to quiet the sobs threatening to break through. “He was conscious on the scene, adrenaline, he thinks that he was able to get himself out of the car. He told the officer he thinks it was a hit-and-run. Someone had been tailing him and then when he thought he lost him, they plowed into his side of the car at an intersection. But Damian was able to get himself out before it caught fire.” He clears his throat. “The officer did say he was pretty banged up and shocked he was able to move.”

Veronica turns her eyes to me. “This is good. He’s okay. He’s alive.”
