Noah drove over to Lev’s place, his thoughts always drifting back to Becca.

SIX

BECCA

Becca really needed a cold shower.

The second she’d closed the door and heard the engine of Noah’s truck start, she stomped her foot like a petulant little child. She hadn’t felt that much fire in her belly since he had left, her heart drained of love, her body stricken with a passionless existence. It had all come back like a tidal wave the moment he walked into the ice cream shop.

Becca banged her head against the door lightly, then tangled her fingers in her hair as her mind ran like a carnival ride. How much she had truly missed him was an unknown, immeasurable concept right up to the moment she was mere inches from him in his truck. Becca trailed her fingers from her scalp, lightly tracing over the spots he had touched.

Christ, she needed to get laid. It was an astonishing fact that she’d had nothing since he’d been gone other than a few nights of disappointing self-stimulation. She’d called out his name in intense breaths as she climaxed, then would spend the rest of the night in a restless sleep, dreaming that it had been his body that had brought her to such ecstasy.

She had many offers, of course. She was a curvy, fit woman with a fucking brain. Being with anyone else but Noah would have felt wrong and dirty in ways that weren’t fun.

Becca floated her hands roughly down to her breasts, feeling the stiff prick of her nipples beneath her bra. She groaned, knowing Noah had been right to cut them off before things became too heated.

Becca’s hands went limp at her sides as she pushed off the door. She stripped herself naked, leaving a trail of discarded clothing along the way to the bathroom, avoiding mirrors, and yanking on the frigid water of the shower before the sight of her own nude body got the sparks stirring again.

It managed to do the trick. Logic ascended to the surface of her mind like cream in a coffee, the sugary thoughts laying dormant for the time being. As much as it pained her to admit it, they had to take things slowly to avoid a potential cataclysmic heartbreak that would sully their bond forever.

Becca put on a loose shirt and underwear and chilled with some drivel TV and Earl Grey tea before bed. She’d left her phone in the kitchen and found that there were three missed calls as she clicked on the kettle.

“Whoops.”

They were all from her good friend, Rayna Flowers, who she had grown up with in Lev’s clan. Rayna was far more simple-minded and had a taste for the glamorous, which Becca often found tacky, but nevertheless, Rayna had been there through the harrowing adjustment of losing Noah. It hadn’t been easy to pull her back up to her feet, and Becca was eternally grateful for her.

Becca quickly dialed up her friend, who worked in a spa down the street from the ice cream shop. They normally spent most of the day chatting over texts, often meeting for lunch and even a post-work decompression session. Becca guiltily chewed on her lower lip as she put the phone on speaker.

Ray picked up after a ring. “Becca, what the fuck?”

“I know, I know,” Becca said, leaning against the kitchen counter as the kettle boiled. “It’s been a hectic day, I’m sorry. I meant to return your messages sooner.”

“So it’s true then?”

The amber light of the kettle clicked off as steam rose and settled on the ceiling. Becca cringed and continued gnawing at her lower lip.

“Yes?” she said hesitantly. “He’s back.”

Ray was just as blunt as Becca, but only in a way that men found shocking enough to consider a personality trait. Becca preferred it that way.

“Becca …” Ray sighed into the phone.

“I didn’t do anything!”

“Then why is it nearly eleven on a school night?”

Becca scoffed, then grabbed the kettle and carefully poured the hot water over the tea bag. Ray knew her better than anyone, so it was pointless to lie. Even through the phone, she was as transparent as a bone white sheet.

“We kissed in the truck,” Becca confessed, stirring her tea with a tiny spoon. “I was ready to pounce on him, but he put a stop to it.”

Ray chuckled, which made Becca chuckle too. The tension transfused for a moment as she carried the phone and her tea into the bedroom.

“Amazing sex aside, do you remember what that man did to you? Leaving you high and dry with nothing but a pithy apology?”

Becca did remember, and she remembered it keenly. But that hadn’t stopped her from thinking about how warm his mouth would feel wrapped around her nipples.

She curled up on her bed and sighed, the cup of tea resting between her legs as she set the phone on the bedside table. She blew air out of her lips roughly.
