I’m not sure when I started crying. Maybe I have been ever since Kye called. She holds me, trying to comfort me, and I cry onto her shoulder.

“Let’s get to the hospital and see what’s going on,” she tells me softly, and I nod.

I grab my purse, and we run outside to her car and peel out of the driveway.

“Have you heard anything?” I ask her as we race toward the hospital.

“Just that he was shot, and he was being rushed into surgery.”

I’ve always thought I would be good in a crisis, but if the crisis involves Gates, then I guess not.

We fight our way through traffic, and Aria parks as close as she can to the front doors before we both sprint inside.

“Second floor,” Aria tells me, reading something on her phone. “They’re all in the surgery waiting area.”

I ride the elevator impatiently up to the second floor, and then we jog down the hallway to the surgery wing.

“Dillon,” Rhett says, pulling me in for a quick hug.

“Any news?” I ask, looking around and seeing that Anson, Kye, and Rhett are already here.

“Hey! Any updates?” Quinn asks as she and Lottie head our way.

They both look concerned, and I hug them, letting them comfort me as I wait for any news on Gates.

“Not yet. He’s still in surgery,” Anson says.

“Excuse me, the police want our statement,” Rhett says and for the first time, I notice the two police officers over by the nurses desk.

I nod, starting to pace back and forth to try to burn off some excess nervous energy. I lose track of time before a doctor finally comes into the room and calls Gates’ name.

“That’s us,” I half shout, desperate for any information.

“He’s stable. He lost quite a bit of blood, so he’s going to be weak and out of it for a little bit.”

“But he’s going to be okay, right?”

“Yes, we were able to repair the damage from the bullet. He should make a full recovery. He’ll be up and moving in a few days,” he assures us.

“Thank you,” I whisper, overcome with emotion.

Exhaustion and relief hit me at once, and I sway on my feet.

“Easy,” Kye says, catching me and helping me lower to a seat.

“He’s resting right now, but you can go back and see him in a few minutes,” the doctor tells us.

“Thanks.”

He nods, giving us a small smile as he heads back toward the surgery suite. We wait until a nurse comes and gets us to lead us back to Gates’ room. Anson pulls over a chair for me next to his bedside, and I smile.

“Thanks.”

“He’s sleeping now. It will take a while for the pain medicine and anesthesia to wear off, but you can sit with him,” the nurse tells us.

I nod, reaching forward and taking Gates’ hand in mine. He looks so pale and vulnerable. It’s the first time that I’ve seen him this way. Gates has always seemed so strong and capable like he could take on the whole world.

“I’m going to go get us something to eat. I think it’s going to be a long night,” Kye says, and I nod.
