I close my eyes to keep the tears at bay. “Yeah. There are screenings. But I’ve been putting them off.”

“So you’re scared,” he says quietly. “I can work with that, baby.” He kisses my forehead as if he’s got this under control.

“All the money in the world won’t stop cancer, Jay.”

Watching me with a look of pure certainty, he runs his thumb against his lips. “I know that, baby, but neither will fear.” He pulls me close. His heart beats wildly against his rib cage. “Give me your fears.Always.I can’t protect you from everything, even I know that, but I’ll never stop trying. If it’s just you, me, and Chloe for the rest of our lives, that’s enough for me. But avoiding the doctor, avoiding answers and screenings, that only gives cancer a chance to take you away from us. So please, baby, don’t live in fear. We’ll face this, just like we do everything else.Together.”

“But what if…” My voice cracks. I’m terrified that all I have will slip through my fingers. Just as I finally have it all figured out. “What if the doctor tells me I have it? I don’t want to have more babies and then leave you all.”

Jay shakes his head. “Then we fight.”

“You make it seem so simple.”

He rubs my cheek with his thumb. “Because it is. We can’t predict the future. But I’ll fight every day for you, and I need you to do the same for Chloe and me. Can you do that? Can you trust that I’ll be by your side no matter what the outcome is? If we have six months together or sixty years, I’ll be by your side until my last breath.”

“I love you,” I whisper, in absolute awe of my new husband.

He leans down and captures my lips. “I love you too,” he says between kisses, already hardening inside me again. “Now let’s practice making a baby, wife.”

Knowing the importance of family to Cat, I arranged our birthday dinner at a hibachi restaurant with the intention of including her brothers, my brothers, Sophie’s family, Cynthia, and, of course, Chloe. While the rest of the world can’t know that I’m Chloe’s dad, the people attending the party all have the right to know. I was hoping that honoring their family tradition of always spending birthdays at a hibachi restaurant would garner affection from her brothers.

If not affection, then at least not downright hostility. As of last night, we’re family, and I’ll be damned if my wife loses her brothers due to our marriage.

“Morning, husband,” Cat coos, running gentle circles against the tattoos on my chest.

Fuck, I love hearing her call me that.

“Happy birthday, wife.” Tipping her chin up in my direction, I kiss my bride.

She hums as I pull back. “Happy birthday, baby. I could get used to waking up like this.”

Tickling her side, I roll on top of her. “You should get used to waking up likethis,” I growl. Then I slide down her body and settle myself between her legs.

“Oh yeah, okay, that works too,” she says on a gasp as I lap at her pussy.

When her phone rings beside her, she groans and huffs at the display. The call is coming from her brother’s office.

“Pick it up,” I murmur into her flesh. “Like old times.”

She swats at my head and grasps my hair to guide me where she wants me.

But I pull back and watch her with a smirk. “Want to play a little game, wife?”

She grunts. “It already went to voice mail.”

The second the words are out of her mouth, it rings again, and I can’t hold back a guffaw.

She rolls her eyes and picks it up, smiling at the display this time. “Go on now,” she whispers, bucking her hips into me.

I chuckle as I settle back between her thighs. I fucking love the taste of her. The feel of her legs wrapped around my neck, pulling me closer. The way she grips my hair when I hit her in a spot she doesn’t want me to leave.

“Hey, Soph,” Cat says when she hits the speaker phone icon, still maintaining her cool.
