But at this moment, as the woman who owns my heart strides toward me, I know I have no choice. The only reason I had a shot at Catherine was because of what my brothers have done for me. And as hotheaded as Cash is these days, there’s no doubt in my mind that he will destroy my family company before I can even get a word in. He won’t take my word about the plans Theo and I made. And since Theo is still in a fucking coma, I have no one to corroborate my story.
But when he does wake up, we can make this right. Hopefully, he can get through to Cat, because I sure as fuck can’t.
I don’t know whether it’s because of the past or the present. I thought we were moving forward, and then the fucking media had to go and make up another lie about me battling it out with Cash over Grace.
I couldn’t care less what Grace and Cash do.
The only perk of bumping into my old friend was that the media speculation left Cat jealous enough to actually recognize she had feelings for me. That’s why I said yes to dinner with Grace weeks ago. Not because I have any interest in rekindling some love affair that never existed in the first place. I seized the opportunity because it made Cat jealous. Petty? Sure, but jealousy was an emotion I was afraid I’d never evoke from her again.
I blow out a breath while I follow Cat’s movements. Maybe I can talk to her. Convince her to tell her brothers I’m not the scum they believe me to be. We can tell them we’re together. Then we can figure out a way to work on the Sintac deal as a cohesive unit.
Cat stops at the door, her eyes narrowing and her lips pursed. Something has my kitten ready to scratch. “I gotta go, Garreth. But I’ll do what I can.”
“The event is next Friday, Jay. You need to be there.”
I curl my finger in Catherine’s direction, summoning her as I push back from my desk and spread my legs wide in invitation.
“Fine. I’ll talk to you later,” I say to my brother, then tap End to disconnect the call.
Cat remains standing, her arms crossed and her expression shuttered.
“What happened now?”
She finally stalks into my office and tosses her phone onto my lap. I take a deep breath to keep myself from losing it, but it isn’t easy. This last week has been an exercise in restraint for me. I’ve had to watch the woman I’m in love with day in and day out ignore me because she refuses to move forward, punishing not only me, but herself as well.
“It’s an article. They say you and Grace are moving in together,” she seethes.
I laugh, which only makes her expression darken and her scowl practically vibrate through the room. “What? You and I know it isn’t true. It’s absurd, Cat. Obviously, we aren’t moving in together.”
“Are you going to set the record straight?”
“Are you ready to tell your brothers we’re together?”
She scoffs. “We’re not together!”
My jaw tics. This is fucking exhausting. “I have an event, Cat. Come with me. Give me a chance to show you how good we could be together.”
“No.”
“Cat,” I warn.
“No,” she snaps.
On my desk, my phone rings, and I can’t help but laugh in aggravation at the name that flashes on the screen.Grace.
Cat glares at me. “Answer it,” she dictates.
I roll my eyes, then pick it up without dragging my attention from her. “Gracie, I figured I’d be hearing from you soon. I’m actually surprised it took you so long.”
“Sorry. I know I should have called sooner. I’m sure you’re not loving the press.”
A dark laugh rumbles from my chest, and I keep my eyes on Cat as I reply. “Being considered one of the men lucky enough to be dating you is not a hardship.”
Crossing her arms over her chest, Cat mouths, “Put it on speaker.”
I turn away from her. She’s acting like a child, but maybe if she hears the conversation, she’ll realize that Grace means nothing to me.
Grace’s laughter fills my office as I hit the Speaker icon. “You are ridiculous. Anyway, as you can imagine, this has caused quite a conundrum. People don’t know that I’m getting divorced, so it appears that I’m currently sleeping with both my client and you. Not a great look for me.”
