Even if the front parking lot was empty, there was always the possibility that someone was observing. It was the last thing we wanted, someone from outside our group seeing us talking to a rival organization. Even though the search warrant failed to uncover anything, the police may have still been keeping an eye on us, especially if they had suspicions.

A few moments later, Brandt reappeared at the front door with a black pillowcase in his hand.

“Do you guys have those just lying around at the ready?” Brax guffawed.

“I grabbed it from our laundry room, jackass,” Brandt responded.

“I hope it stinks,” Kujo added.

Brandt walked down the stairs towards Jax. “You can come inside, but we need to cover your head first.” Then he turned to Gunner and Tank and said, “Check him quick before I put this over his head.”

“I don’t really see the point of covering my head,” he told Brandt. “Either way, I’m choosing to trust you, so I hope I don’t regret it.”

“If you’re truly here just for a talk, then you have nothing to be concerned about,” Erik told him.

After Gunner and Tank found no weapons on Jax, Brandt placed the pillowcase over his head and led him into the building.

Guiding him through the bar, they walked down the hallway, and were met with prying eyes and women with their children in their arms. It was silent until we walked past, then the murmuring of voices began to echo through the conference room as we stepped inside. There was no way we would have invited him into the room we used for Church.

Our inner sanctum is far too sacred to be sullied by the presence of a Crow.

Not even for this discussion.

As Erik approached the table, everyone remained in their place and waited until he had taken a seat. Next, Brandt pushed Jax down into his chair and then tore the pillowcase off his head. Despite the urge to laugh at the way his hair was standing up because of the static electricity, I knew this wasn't the time or the place for any sort of humorous display.

“Why were you out of town?” Erik asked.

“I’m not going to tell you the ins and outs of our business, just like I don’t expect you to tell me yours.”

“So why should we trust you, then?” Kujo asked.

“Because one of the men you killed last night was my father.”

“What sort of response should we expect in return?” I asked.

“We didn't have any skin in the game,” Jax responded. “So there's no need for any further retaliation. As of two hours ago, we’ve officially cut all connections with the River City charter.”

“What about revenge for your father?”

“I didn’t come in here guns blazing,” he replied, somehow assuming that was enough of an explanation. Like I should take what he said at face value.

“Which means you could still get your revenge later, once you’ve placated us with your words.”

“Have I even asked for the names of the people responsible for that blood bath?” he asked with teeth clenched.

“Do you want to know?” I asked.

“Of course I’m curious, but that’s not the goal here. My father was an asshole and I couldn’t wait to get out from under his thumb.”

“So why are you here then?” Erik said.

“What are the chances you’ll run the rest of us out of town?”

“Hellcat, Axel and Bear what do you think should happen?” Erik asked. “What the Crows did affected all of you personally.”

“Would we like to avoid further issues with your club? Yes,” I told him. “Do I expect your charter to pack up and move? Not exactly.”
