“She doesn’t leave my side.”

“You act as if she’s your dog.”

“He bought me,” the formerly timid little mouse cut in.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Exactly what it sounds like, dear sister,” Alexei smirked. “I bought her at auction.”

“You bought a girl at a flesh market?” Ana gasped. “What in the actual fuck is wrong with you?”

I quickly reached out, putting my arm around Harleigh's waist and halting her sudden movement. It didn’t matter if he was the one who’d helped to rescue her from the men who took her. After all the trauma and tragedy we had witnessed with the boys we had managed to rescue, I was afraid that if Alexei did not find a way to talk himself out of the situation he had just created, she would take drastic measures when it came to him.

“She asked me to.”

“Why did she ask you to?”

“Somehow she knew about what I did for you.”

“What?” Ana’s hand flew to her mouth.

“Mia heard what I did for you when we were younger, so she asked me to buy her.”

“Why was she there?”

Alexei motioned to her. “Mia, come here.”

I could tell by the look in Harleigh’s eyes that she was not impressed with the way he was treating Mia. Then we all watched as she molded into his side, gazing up at him like he hung the moon when she answered, “my uncle sold me.”

“Have you killed him yet?” Harleigh asked Alexei.

“He’s next on my list.”

“Good,” Harleigh responded. “Let me know if you need a hand.”

“She’s as bloodthirsty as you,” Mia told Alexei. “Is she your sister?”

“No.”

“Then who is she?”

He tilted his head. “Soon to be sister-in-law?” Ana snorted, drawing his attention. “So you’re not that mad at me then?”

“You’re not off the hook yet. Don’t think just because you’re head of a criminal organization that I won’t kick you in the balls for not telling me that Dimitri is our little brother. I should have known there was a reason you placed him here.”

“No one outside of this room should know he’s related to us.”

“Why not?”

“There are those who seek to destroy our father’s empire. The best way to do that would be to remove his offspring from the equation.”

“Who?”

“That’s not your concern. I know you’re protected here and with both of you out of Granville, maybe you’ll be forgotten when all hell breaks loose.”

“Are you in trouble?” Harleigh asked.

“Not yet.”
