“Evening, Doc,” I greeted him. “Come on in.”

Doc was a retired family doctor who got roped into helping the Reapers years before any of my siblings were born. None of us really knew the reason. I was pretty sure that had died along with all the other secrets our father took with him to the grave. We continued to use his services, even after we asked him if he wanted out of being called.

He had told us, “If I didn’t do this then where would an old man like me find excitement?” After that we never asked him again. We used his services for anything we had to avoid going to the hospital for. Which in our line of work was almost everything.

“Your brother tells me you needed to be checked out,” he said as he locked the door behind him.

“That’s right, but I’ve decided I don’t want a full exam. I just want you to do some tests and give me a pill, just in case.”

“Are you sure?”

“At first I thought it would be a good idea, but the more I considered the probable outcome, the less I wanted to know.”

“If you’re sure?”

“I appreciate you wanting to confirm my decision, but really I’m of the thought that there’s really no point to knowing whether anything happened. There’s nothing we can do about it now. I still want all the tests done and a Plan B if you have it, or something similar.”

“Do you still have your IUD?”

I nodded. “I still want a pill. Better safe than sorry.”

“That won’t be a problem. For what it’s worth, your brother mentioned that the man who got you out had kept an eye on you.”

“He admitted he wasn’t with me the whole time. They had me held down in the basement with other women they planned on selling.”

“Did you get them out too?”

I sighed. The part of my escape that didn’t manage to free the rest of the girls was going to bother me. If only Juan had made his move sooner. “Juan told me they had been moved to a new location before he could get me out.”

I knew what he was doing. Trying to take my mind off of what was happening by asking questions. It was working, but I still couldn’t ignore the feel of the sample tubes being pushed onto the needle that was buried in my arm as he switched them out.

“Are you sure you’ve taken enough,” I joked.

“I thought you were tougher than this,” he teased. “At least that’s what your brothers always tell me. I remember when you were younger and broke your wrist rough housing with your brothers. You refused to go to the hospital for a day and a half.”

“It didn’t hurt that much.”

“I’ve come to the conclusion that your pain tolerance is way too high for your own good. Either that or you’re just as pig-headed as your father and willing to prove everyone wrong by suffering through the pain.”

Doc continues the rest of the examination in silence. Once he finished, he dug through the small duffle bag he had brought with him and grabbed two packets and a small Ziploc of first aid supplies. He handed everything over to me.

“I’m giving you two pills, just in case you’re sick this evening and you need to repeat the dose. Take one of them after I leave with or without food.” He pointed at the Ziploc in my hand and said, “That will be enough to deal with the scrapes I saw on your body.”

“How long will it take for the results to come back?” I asked.

“My clinic has rapid HIV testing, so I should have the results tonight. The other tests could take a few days, so you might want to wait until then to resume normal sexual activity. Longer if you should choose. I don’t care what any of those men say, you take whatever time you need.”

“Of course.”

“Also, I should mention that unlike other medical clinics, I’ll contact you about the results, either way.”

That was one thing I would never understand. It takes two minutes to call someone and let them know everything will be okay. It was the waiting that killed a person.

When I opened the door for Doc to step out into the hall, I spotted the guys leaning against the wall. The three amigos. I bit back a laugh as the nickname flew into my head.

The last thing I needed was for these three to gang up on me.
