Considering I was a creature of habit, being displaced from my usual haunt was unsettling. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, “What are you doing here?” I winced at the perturbed look on his face. Unfortunately, I was one of those people who had to sit at the same desk in school and if someone else took my self-appointed seat, everything was off all day. Sure, it was all in my head, but I didn’t care.

“Last I checked, this is still my office,” he responded.

“What are we going to do about what’s happening on the East Side?”

“Nothing.”

“We can’t just sit by and do nothing,” I argued.

“Why are you so hell bent on doing something so risky that it would bring unneeded attention to the club?”

“It wasn’t just a couple of adults who were affected. They snatched a fifteen-year-old homeless kid off the street, dragged her into a tent and repeatedly raped her.” Just the thought of it made me want to tear those guys limb from limb. “They did that to her, and no one could stop them because they were defenceless against their cache of weapons.”

“How do you know all this? Did Brax show you a police report or something?”

“I went down and talked to them.” After I read about the attacks in the newspaper, I immediately wanted to help. It was unfortunate enough that there was a whole population of people relegated to living on the streets. Especially when they’re probably minding their own business, just trying to survive to the next day.

“Harleigh,” he grumbled. “Until we locate Dirk, you’re not supposed to be going anywhere alone.”

“Who said I was alone?” I quirked a brow, daring him to prove I was being reckless.

“Who went with you?”

“I took Dimitri with me. Because I knew someone would give me shit.”

“So what’s your plan?”

“I haven’t completely solidified it yet,” I responded, knowing I had a plan to go down there and catch them all by surprise.

He sighed. “Why are you really doing this?”

“They need someone to stand up for them.”

“You and I both know that’s not the only reason.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to admit to me that what happened is affecting you more than you’re letting on.”

“Leave it,” I gritted out through clenched teeth.

“Hunter told me what happened last night,” he replied. “And he’s not the only one talking about your panic attacks.”

My eyes narrowed. “I don’t want to talk about it.” They were so dead to me. “Fine. You want to know why I need to do this?”

“Yes.”

“I need to get back to normal. Right now I feel so far from normal it’s driving me insane. I need some semblance of control in this fucked up world. They used machetes and sledgehammers to attack those people. Some of their injuries were life altering. Sure, I was kidnapped and held for days, shot up with who knows what drugs.” I took a deep breath, then pushed the memory further back in the recesses of my mind. “They don’t have you, okay? None of them have a brother willing to fly across the country and fuck shit up if something happens to them.”

“So you want to be their protector?”

I nodded.

“And what happens when everything comes back to the club?”

“It won’t.” I would make sure it didn’t.

He sighed. “Just because we call you Hellcat doesn’t mean you have nine lives.”
