Unfortunately, my being so desperate for tangible proof of his elevated duplicity, I overlooked the potential danger lurking behind me.

Ready to pounce.

I still didn’t know who took me. It wasn’t Dirk, but he was involved somehow. It wasn’t like some random dude hid in the bushes near Loraine’s home. Waiting for some unsuspecting female to walk near him so he could kidnap and sell them to the Cartel. They had to know I was coming, or at least had people looking out for someone who shouldn’t be there.

“Have you remembered anything more about that night?”

“Not really. It’s all a blur. After they knocked me out, I have no idea where they took me to next, but they travelled with me in the trunk of their vehicles. They switched them at least once because I woke up when I was being moved and they drugged me again. Then the last time I woke up, they walked me into the house and deposited me downstairs.”

“And you saw nothing?”

“They had some sort of cloth bag over my head. The only thing I could see were pinpoints of light through the weave of the cloth.”

“Did you get everyone?” Brax asked as he turned onto his street and drove toward his house.

“I can’t tell you whether I did because the only people I saw were the ones that I dealt with.”

My eyes drifted to Liam’s yard, wondering whether he was sleeping or gaming. It had been almost a week since I tried to visit him. My last panic attack caused me to cancel my plans, and time just flew by so quickly I hadn’t reconnected with him.

“Angel.”

“Hmm?” I glanced over at him, suddenly realizing I’d spaced out for a portion of the drive. Completely missing what he’d said to me. “I’m sorry.”

“I said that I hoped you made them suffer,” he repeated. “For everything they put you through and for everything you’re still going through.”

“Didn’t have time to deal out my vengeance. I’m going to save that for Dirk and whoever was helping him.”

“So you’re positive he was involved?”

“He was in Loraine’s kitchen, and they attacked me just outside of her house.”

“Occam’s razor.”

“Exactly. The more simple explanation is most likely the correct one,” I responded. “But what I can’t figure out is why Dirk was in her kitchen with Jenny.”

“Have you had many dealings with her?”

“The last time I saw her, she was meeting with Loraine at a coffee shop. Before then, I tried to steer clear of her. I’d heard rumours she wasn’t the type of woman to cross. So I just didn’t want to be near her. I was also worried that she might figure out who I was.”

Brax drove the cruiser into the driveway and shut off the ignition. He got out of the vehicle and walked around to my side, opening the door. It always made me feel odd when men opened doors for me, but I knew why he did things like this, so I just let him have his chivalrous moment. It wasn’t like he was hurting me by being a gentleman.

He was just weirding me out.

“Let’s continue this inside.”

I smiled up at him, “How about we do something else?”

ChapterTwenty

HARLEIGH

The momentthe door clicked behind us, he was on me like someone had just shot off a starting gun. He walked me backwards until my legs hit the table. He lifted me up and dropped me down on top of it. Next he took off his belt, and dropped it onto the counter, then stepped between my legs. Then he smashed his lips down on mine, kissing me like he wanted to devour me.

Using one arm wrapped around my waist, he brought me to the edge of the table.

I immediately felt the hard length of him press against my centre. Even through the material of my jeans, I knew just how much he wanted me. It made me feel empowered. When he pulled back, my eyes widened as I spotted the black utility knife in his right hand. The fucker had totally distracted me with his kissing. Almost completely at his mercy, the only thing I could do was grab his wrist as he brought it closer to me.

“What are you planning on doing with that?” I breathed.
