His mouth dropped open. “What the fuck? Who told you about that?”

I snorted at the look on his face. “Your obsession with the Goblin King, or your dreams starring Sarah?” I had said it just to mess with him, but I had no idea me bugging him about a Jim Henson movie would make him so defensive.

“Leave Sarah out of this,” he demanded, as he took a menacing step forward.

“Hold it there,” I told him. “I’m just giving you a hard time. Wow, I’ve never met a dude so obsessed with a movie that he’d take offence to me mentioning the main character.”

“You were talking about the Labyrinth?”

“What else would I be talking about?”

“Never mind,” he replied and stepped back, increasing the distance between us.

“Nu uh. You’re gonna have to tell me now,” I pressed. “Either that or I’ll find out from someone else.” We both knew the someone else I was referring to was Brax, but I wouldn’t risk saying his name while the officers were in the building.

He groaned, “My roommate’s name is Sarah.”

“I seriously didn’t know.” It had never crossed my mind to get information on him. “I wouldn’t have teased you if I had. As much as we don’t get along, I wouldn’t threaten you.”

“Good to know,” he responded.

“I’m serious,” I told him, but then added, “At least not without just cause.”

“I’ll keep that in mind the next time I have to serve a search warrant or need to arrest you.”

“Sounds good.”

“That’s it? You’re not going to defend yourself?”

“Defend against what? You know who I am and what my family does. Why would I be surprised that a cop had a hard on for us?”

“I don’t have a hard on,” he scoffed.

“Could have fooled me,” I countered. “You and I both know you’d love to throw me in jail and lose the key.”

“I don’t like the changes he’s been going through since you reconnected. But, that doesn’t mean I’m gonna use my position on the force to get you out of his life. At least not the way you’re assuming.”

“I’ve tried to push him away, but he keeps coming back. After everything we’ve been through together, I’m tired of telling him to go away. You might not understand, but we’ve got a lot of history.”

“I know all about your history.”

“I highly doubt you know everything, but that’s beside the fact,” I responded.

“I just don’t understand why he’s okay with you being with two other guys. Why do you need him around when you’ve got them?” he asked. “You’re just bringing him down to your level when you’ve already got two men who are exactly like you.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “Why is that any ofyourbusiness?”

I hadn’t even noticed how our voices had raised during our heated argument. Suddenly, two officers emerged from the office with their hands on their guns, their faces stern, the intensity of the room rose astronomically.

“Is everything okay out here?” one of them asked.

“Yes,” we both replied at the same time.

“I was asking Officer King.”

“Everything is fine,” he responded. “Did you guys find anything?”

“Not yet. Should we keep looking?”
